TRUCK BYPASS AND INTERIM ROAD FUNDING UPDATE
Following our July 26, 2026 media release, “Town and Council Lobby Province and Industry for Modern Interim Alternative to Ongoing Historical Truck Bypass Direction,” we are pleased to share a significant update below regarding our progress on this vital regional initiative.
While municipal leadership continues to work through the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) toward final Provincial Cabinet approval for both sustained long-term maintenance funding and the $6.5 million capital upgrade, Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. has generously stepped forward to bridge the first two years of this initiative with essential local investment.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Agnico Eagle for their exceptional corporate leadership, civic support, and commitment to community safety and infrastructure. Their contribution provides crucial momentum while broader provincial channels are pursued, allowing for immediate relief for the community.
Additionally, we appreciate the ongoing open dialogue with representatives from the Ministry of Transportation as we present our case and work earnestly to build support for these longer-term objectives. We look forward to continued engagement with the Province to demonstrate the necessity of this project, and we anticipate further news on our long-term maintenance request by Spring 2027 as work continues to advance the overall truck bypass strategy.
Together with our industry partners, Council remains fully focused on advocating for a modern, safe, and durable transportation corridor for our community and region.

TOWN OF COCHRANE ANNOUNCE AGREEMENT WITH AGNICO EAGLE SUPPORTING MUNICIPAL INFRASTRUCTURE
COCHRANE, ON – August 14, 2026 — The Town of Cochrane and Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (Agnico Eagle) are pleased to announce a funding agreement aimed at supporting local road infrastructure. Under the agreement, Agnico Eagle will provide the Town of Cochrane with $250,000 per year, over two years, beginning in the summer of 2026, to assist in funding the ongoing maintenance of the local municipal road network connecting Highway 11 and Highway 652. (Detour Mine Road).
Addressing a Shared Regional Challenge
For decades, the municipal route connecting Highway 11 and Highway 652 has served as an important transportation corridor, linking the region’s vast natural resource sector to broader provincial transportation networks and supporting communities, businesses and regional economic activity across Northern Ontario. Over the past decade alone, local town traffic data indicates that heavy truck along this route has increased threefold. While this traffic supports economic activity in the region, the route continues to require ongoing maintenance and investment to meet the needs of all users.
Annual maintenance for this industrial corridor is projected at approximately $250,000 per year, alongside substantial long-term capital upgrade needs. For perspective, a 1% property tax increase in Cochrane generates roughly $90,000. This financial partnership provides funding to ensure the route remains safe and operational.

Collaborative Path Forward
The route connecting Highway 11 and Highway 652 represents an important regional transportation corridor supporting communities and economic activity across Northern Ontario. This partnership reflects the importance of continued collaboration among municipalities, industry and the Province to support regional transportation infrastructure.
The Town of Cochrane, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), and regional industry have maintained a highly productive and collaborative working relationship throughout these discussions. The Town will continue working with the Province of Ontario toward a long-term transportation solution, while this interim funding helps address current municipal road maintenance needs.
Together, all parties remain focused on practical interim solutions that preserve local roads today while longer-term infrastructure improvements are finalized.
