Celebrating Our Successes and Moving Forward
These past two years have been tough on all of us - we are frustrated with lockdowns and health mandates, with inflation, wage insecurity, supply chain issues. It seems like nothing is changing and not

hing is getting done. I choose to remember what we have here… a jewel on Georgian Bay with 4-seasons’ worth of activities to take advantage of, thriving businesses - both large and small, great schools, and great services. We as a community have taken affirmative action against racism, and we recognize and embrace our diverse people and cultures. We are a growing community with a strong tax base, and a financial status that is the envy of hundreds of municipalities in Ontario. Let’s build on the positives, build on our incredible strengths and move forward with energy and optimism. Housing Affordability
Housing that is affordable for everyone needs to be a high priority for this coming term of Council. We cannot sustain our businesses or our employment base without it. Our new Official Plan will assist with a made-in-Collingwood road map to ensure that we are creating new opportunities for all different types and sizes of housing, for rent and for ownership. I want to be a leading member of a strong council that will think outside the box and use all the tools available to ensure we increase supply as quickly as possible - facilitating secondary suites, coach and laneway housing, using our Servicing Capacity Allocation Policy to incentivize developers to build a wider array of new housing. We must develop new financing and land banking schemes to create non-profit housing and tap into the federal and provincial money that is available now for the creation of affordable housing. Climate Change and the Environment
The COP 26 Resolution to achieve Net Zero by 2050 involves every level of government, starting with municipal. It is incumbent on all of us to make concrete changes in the way we live, eat, move, build and grow. Collingwood’s declaration of a climate crisis in 2019 must now be followed with an ambitious and achievable Climate Change Action Plan and a commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions in Collingwood by 2050. These targets will be achieved through a commitment to Active Transportation, to improved public transit services that people will actually use, and to protection of our natural heritage – our urban canopy, our creeks and wetlands. This is Nature’s infrastructure that absorbs carbon, that absorbs stormwater, and provides us with the green spaces we so value. Arts Culture and Recreation
Arts and Culture are one of the 5 pillars of the Community Based Strategic Plan. They are a crucial part of the fabric of our town and very important to our residents. At long last, we have completed the Collingwood Arts Centre Feasibility Study, paving the way to refining the scope and planning for the establishment of an Arts Centre. I want to work with our community to bring this project to fruition. Covid 19 got in the way of almost all of our most important projects, now it’s time to move forward. I want to see all of our most significant capital projects get done - The Terminals redevelopment, the Harbourview Park Waterplay Park, and material advancement, even completion of an All Arts Facility and a Multi-use recreational facility. We have the studies, we have the masterplans, we have reserve funds set aside - Council needs to work as a team and hold itself and staff accountable for real progress on these projects. Citizen Participation in Day-to-Day Governance
Our community is comprised of residents from all walks of life, with talent and energy to give, helping us to collectively achieve our goals. Many of our most significant projects could benefit from input and assistance from the hundreds of volunteers who call Collingwood home. Let’s reinstate citizen committees for every major portfolio - Recreation, Arts and Culture, Housing, Economic Development,
Transportation and Climate Change - with every committee chaired by a member of Council who becomes a specialist and an advocate around the table.

Music at the waterfront amphitheatre on the evening of National Indigenous Heritage Day. These are the times that make me just bust with pride, in our sincere effort to embrace diversity, to celebrate the arts and our evolving waterfront, and the ways in which we come together as community.

Here are the certified election results! I am feeling so positive about the team that will form the new Council. Thank you Collingwood, for your support, and a super big thank you to my election team, including my sweet husband George the "sign guy"!!
To the candidates that were not successful, be proud of what you did accomplish - running for election is not for the faint of heart but you did it!

Today I signed the Community Leaders for a Sustainable Simcoe (CLASS) pledge. Read more about them at https://simcoecommunityleaders.ca/

"I pledge to be a community leader who acts in the best interests of my community. I will actively listen and seek to understand the needs and wants of my community, and collaborate in good faith with others in attaining them.
I recognise that community means, at its core, a respect and responsibility for the common good. This means that the integrity of our environment – the core common good we rely on for food, air, water, and the foundations of our economy – is central to my commitment as a community leader.

Consequently, I will endeavour to:
- Support a rapid and robust transition away from carbon intensive energy toward renewables;
- Prioritise improving the social determinants of health for all residents when making municipal decisions and advocate for policies at higher levels of government that improve the social determinants of health;
- Support and promote a built form, such as 15 minute, complete communities as a way to take climate action and make our communities more affordable, equitable and healthy;
- Prioritise building homes of all types within existing built boundaries to reduce sprawl, decrease residents’ costs and protect our natural heritage and farmland;
- Invest in creating public spaces that are vibrant and welcoming to foster connected communities;
- Prioritise and promote the use of green, natural infrastructure to increase community resilience;
- Support the local agricultural economy and reduce barriers to food security at the community and household level
- Recognise and strengthen the role of clean air and water in supporting the health and sustainability of our communities, and work to protect these valuable resources in both rural and urban areas;
- Increase public engagement in local governance by promoting inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability."

Community Leaders for a Sustainable Simcoe (CLASS) is a network of individuals who are engaged in promoting positive change in our communities.

Municipalities are being blamed for contributing to the affordability crisis - the issue is far more complex than that.

It is fashionable to point at Ontario’s municipal governments, blaming high house prices on slow approval processes. The reality is far more complex.

We dedicated this copse of trees planted during Covid as the DiLorenzo Park, in gratitude for the half million dollar donation from Julie DiLorenzo to enhance the tree canopy in Collingwood. Thanks Julie, we are grateful and it is being so well used, funding not only this park, but the planting of trees on Town and private property, some has gone to fund riverine tree planting by the NVCA, and more recently some of the funds have been allocated to Pollinate Collingwood and their efforts - with more than 45 pollinator gardens around town so far. Pollinate Collingwood, Town of Collingwood johns Vote Steve Perry Yvonne Hamlin for Mayor of Collingwood. Thanks Erika Pothe for the photos! Oh, and the cupcakes were delicious 😁

Nice to finally have the Centennial Pool open again, just in time for the return to indoors. The new tile surface makes a huge difference in the look of the pool! Oh and did I mention - the cost was entirely covered by a Community Building Fund grant from the government of Ontario and a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation!
Afterwards there was a super cool, sold out event for families, an open swim accompanied by a screening of "Dory"! Stay tuned for more of these swim and a movie events. (Photo courtesy Collingwood Today)

We are making progress on our Traffic Calming policies, but sometimes these initiatives are just a no-brainer, for keeping our residents safe!

Coun. Deb Doherty brought forward the request after hearing from a resident who said the town's traffic calming request process was too much work for a senior with mobility challenges

My Priorities

Managed Growth – Protecting our Quality of Life

I support growth in our community - it pays for improved services for residents and businesses. But we must grow with a view to protecting what we value as a community – small town culture, quiet neighbourhoods, a walkable and cycle able community, green space, trees and wildlife. I have strongly advocated for higher development property standards and restrictions on the operation of heavy equipment.
