Broombusters in Coquitlam

Broombusters in Coquitlam Broombusters Invasive Plant Society has groups all over Van Island & lower BC mainland. This is one. It covers large expanses under power line corridors.

Scotch broom was brought to Vancouver Island in 1850 by Captain Walter Grant. He planted a few seeds in Sooke, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Since then, Scotch broom has spread north rapidly and densely across Vancouver Island and adjacent islands, and all across the Pacific Northwest It quickly takes over disturbed areas along roadsides, railways, forest roads; and quickly covers field

s, meadows and any deforested areas. Broom thrives in sunlight. A single broom plant can produce up to 18,000 seeds that remain viable in the soil for 30-40 years. When exposed to sunlight, broom seeds sprout! Want to get involved? Subscribe today to keep in the know when we offer cutting events in April/May each year. Our Coquitlam chapter launched in 2022 with 29 enthusiastic volunteers contributing 187 hours of work. Our first community cut took place on Earth Day, when we cleared invasive broom from Glen Park.

We’re proud to partner with the City of Coquitlam, and could not do work in parks without their support.

If you spot an area in Coquitlam that needs “busting,” we’d love to hear from you. We’re also eager to collaborate with schools, businesses and community groups—and we encourage those in neighbouring Metro Vancouver communities to consider starting a Broombusters chapter of their own.

Many hands make light work—join us! Learn more at broombusters.org/coquitlam

Today we were back at the Coquitlam Crunch! 🌿💪

As we launch into our 5th season in Coquitlam, this is a site we’ve returned to many times over the years — and it’s always a reminder that the work is never truly done. Scotch broom is a beast. For decades, seeds have been lying dormant in the soil, waiting for the chance to grow again. In just one year, broom can shoot back up to shoulder height!

We’ve worked this area through much of the past four years, and today our team of 6 Broombusters joined forces with 6 City staff members to tackle the top of the Crunch. Together, and in only two-hours, we filled an entire city truck and created the pile you see here. 🌱🚛

Huge thanks to the City crew who not only helped answer questions from the public, but also grabbed clippers and loppers themselves, cutting broom and hauling away piles cleared by our volunteers.

THIS is community. 🙌

Every cut helps protect native ecosystems and gives local plants a better chance to thrive.

Stay tuned for details on our next community broom cut!
