Congratulations to the Association for New Canadians on the launch of Welcome NL!
This initiative is a crucial step in supporting newcomers as they settle into our province. It aligns perfectly with our FSC-funded Welcoming Communities Project and the Economic Immigration Ideas Lab (EIIL) at NLWIC.
By reducing barriers and fostering a sense of belonging from day one, this enhances our local workforce and strengthens the integration and long-term retention of newcomers in our communities.
We can’t wait to see the positive impact this initiative will have!
ANC Launches WelcomeNL to Support Pre-Arrival Newcomers
The Association for New Canadians is excited to launch WelcomeNL, a new pre-arrival program helping eligible newcomers prepare for life in Newfoundland and Labrador before they arrive.
WelcomeNL provides personalized support in three key areas:
Settlement Planning: Housing, healthcare, education, and community connections guidance. Employment Readiness: Workplace readiness, job counselling, and credential support. Language Learning: Communication goals, language proficiency, and training resources.
To qualify, an applicant needs a full-time job or job offer from a Newfoundland and Labrador employer and plans to live and work here. Eligibility also extends to spouses or common-law partners of both international students and temporary residents coming to the province.
"We know the first few months in a new country can be overwhelming," said Christopher Vaughan, program coordinator. "By connecting with newcomers before they arrive, we can answer questions early, reduce stress, and help them start work and daily life with more confidence."
WelcomeNL is offered at no charge to participants and is supported by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's Department of Jobs, Growth and Rural Development.
The program aligns with the province's ongoing efforts to attract and retain skilled newcomers to address labour market needs and support population growth in communities across Newfoundland and Labrador.
