BOISAR members witnessed an amazing display of kindness and remembrance yesterday. Almost 200 people riding over 90 side by sides and quads took part in the First Annual Don Snow Memorial Ride.

All these folks came together to support Donnie's family, share fond memories, and enjoy a beautiful evening on the trails.

Throughout the evening, we heard many conversations and stories about Donnie's friendship, kindness, and his support of his family, friends, and the offroad riding community.

The extent of Donnie's impact was on clear display yesterday. It's obvious that this gentleman has left behind an incredible legacy whose memory will live on, not only during events like this, but also in private moments as we ride the trails in this beautiful corner of the world.

BOISAR members were humbled and honored that the family chose to donate the proceeds from this ride to our search and rescue team. These funds will be directly reinvested to enhance search and rescue capacity in the region and our efforts to help those in need throughout the Bay of Islands and beyond.

Thanks to the Western Sno-Riders for organizing this event.

BOISAR members offer since condolences to Mr. Snow's friends and family.

Rest easy Donnie

BOISAR introduces Advanced Drone Technology to enhance SAR capabilities in the region!

Due to the generous support of municipalities, community members, and business throughout the Bay of Islands, BOISAR members are now trained and equipped to use drones in support of search and rescue operations.

BOISAR's new all weather drone can fly in high winds, wet conditions, and temperatures down to -20. It is also equipped with search lights and a speaker to communicate with subjects on the ground, as well as night and thermal imaging capabilities, and a high resolution camera with 112x zoom.

Drone images can also be analyzed in very high detail using special software to search for specific colors or shapes.

Earning the training certifications to operate this equipment safely and effectively is challenging and requires significant time commitments. BOISAR is fortunate that several of our members are quickly working towards these certifications - with some already trained as spotters, visual observers, and pilots.

Over the coming months we will incorporate this technology into our training and SAR deployments.

BOISAR is pleased that the dedication of our members, coupled with the support of the community, allows us to continually advance our efforts to provide effective Search and Rescue response throughout the region.

Thanks to NLSARA and Doug Germani for providing our members with specialized training in SAR drone operations.

As we prioritize sharing missing person info, we are a little late in sharing news on our most recent SAR deployment! At 1:00 p.m. on May 24th, BOISAR was deployed to search for a lost hiker on the Man in the Mountain Trail just East of Corner Brook.

This search had a great outcome - Thank you to Ernest for sharing your great message on hiking safety (see Ernest’s post in the photo below)!

It is easy to get turned around in all of the beautiful terrain around western Newfoundland, so it is important to always remember the three T’s -Trip planning (always tell someone where you are going, and when to expect you back) -Training (check your route and make sure you are physically ready for it and you are trained and ready to use your gear) -Taking the essentials (bringing the appropriate gear and supplies can make a huge difference in the outcome of your hike) Want to learn more? Check out the resources at https://www.adventuresmart.ca/the-three-ts/

Finally, be like Ernest! If you or someone you know may be lost or injured in the backcountry, don’t hesitate in calling 911 to ensure the appropriate search and rescue resources are dispatched to help!

Thanks also to the passerby (Sam from Ontario) who accompanied Ernest until BOISAR members arrived.

Stay Safe Everyone!

🚨Flood Watch🚨

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Water Resources Division has issued a Flood Watch for communities along the Humber River.

Water levels are rising along the Humber River and other water bodies throughout the region.

What BOISAR is doing to prepare: shifts of members are being placed on standby over the weekend and members are double checking the readiness of our rescue boat, smaller inflatable boats, ice/cold water rescue suits, life jackets, and other water related search and rescue equipment.

What you can do: stay away from shorelines and riverbanks as these areas may be unstable, use extra caution when traveling in the backcountry as travel and rescue access routes may become compromised, watch for changing conditions, and monitor official information sources.

Stay safe everyone!

BOISAR ushers in Emergency Preparedness Week with a deployment for snow-stranded motorists...

At 8:20 p.m. on Monday, BOISAR members were called out by the RNC to locate and assist motorists standard by deep mud and soft snow approximately 14 km in Lady Slipper Forest Access Road, just west of Corner Brook.

15 BOISAR members responded to the call and, after collecting 4x4 SAR trucks, Argo, and snowmobiles, set up a staging area near the beginning of the forest access road.

The stranded subjects were soon located and, despite being stranded for several hours, and numerous attempts to get their vehicle unstuck from the mud and snow, were found to be in good health. With some assistance from BOISAR, the motorists were escorted back to safety without incident. Members returned and reset equipment and stood down by 11:00 p.m.

On this call members encountered sections of deep snow interspersed with areas of heavy mud. Backcountry travelers are reminded that for the next few weeks, such early spring conditions can be expected on many of the forest access roads and trails throughout the region.

As spring conditions slowly arrive, we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the three T's of wilderness safety: Trip planning (let a trusted person know where you are going, what you're doing, and when you plan to return), Taking the essentials (including basic survival items and a reliable communication device), and Training (before embarking on backcountry adventures, be sure that your training and experience level will allow you to participate safely).

These reminders are well reflected in this year's theme for Emergency Preparedness Week:

BE PREPARED. KNOW YOUR RISKS!

BOISAR Radiothon Fundraiser on BayFM on June 20th! Help Us By Telling Your BOISAR Story!

Have you or your family members ever witnessed or experienced BOISAR’s search or rescue efforts? If so, we’d love to hear from you!

Given the nature of many SAR incidents, we often never have the opportunity to follow up with subjects or their families after SAR deployments. If you’d like to send along a short message or update, our members would sincerely appreciate it!

Also, with your permission, we’ll relay your message on air during our upcoming Radiothon Fundraiser on BayFM on June 20th . Such messages will help listeners hear about the roles played by BOISAR in the region.

If you are interested in telling your BOISAR story, please send a direct message here or simply comment below!
