BOISAR ushers in Emergency Preparedness Week with a deployment for snow-stranded motorists...
At 8:20 p.m. on Monday, BOISAR members were called out by the RNC to locate and assist motorists standard by deep mud and soft snow approximately 14 km in Lady Slipper Forest Access Road, just west of Corner Brook.
15 BOISAR members responded to the call and, after collecting 4x4 SAR trucks, Argo, and snowmobiles, set up a staging area near the beginning of the forest access road.
The stranded subjects were soon located and, despite being stranded for several hours, and numerous attempts to get their vehicle unstuck from the mud and snow, were found to be in good health. With some assistance from BOISAR, the motorists were escorted back to safety without incident. Members returned and reset equipment and stood down by 11:00 p.m.
On this call members encountered sections of deep snow interspersed with areas of heavy mud. Backcountry travelers are reminded that for the next few weeks, such early spring conditions can be expected on many of the forest access roads and trails throughout the region.
As spring conditions slowly arrive, we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the three T's of wilderness safety: Trip planning (let a trusted person know where you are going, what you're doing, and when you plan to return), Taking the essentials (including basic survival items and a reliable communication device), and Training (before embarking on backcountry adventures, be sure that your training and experience level will allow you to participate safely).
These reminders are well reflected in this year's theme for Emergency Preparedness Week:
