🚍⚡ Cornwall is rolling into the future of public transit with our partners, T3 Transit!

This week, Her Worship, Mayor Minerva McCourt and I had the opportunity to tour and test out the brand-new electric minibuses that Town of Cornwall PEI helped purchase alongside our transit partners from the City of Charlottetown, PE and the Town of Stratford PEI.

The Mayor and I came away very impressed. These buses are incredibly quiet, smooth, and surprisingly nimble — making them a great fit for navigating some of Cornwall’s smaller streets and neighbourhoods. 🛣️👏

We also had the chance to chat with regular transit riders, Kevin and Skye, who were excited, not only about the new buses, but also about the expanded transit routes that Council has supported this year. Hearing positive feedback directly from riders reinforces why investing in public transit matters so much. 😊

The total cost for the two buses was approximately $970,000, with Cornwall’s share of the capital cost representing approximately 5%, or $52,250. Through strong regional partnerships and support from other levels of government, we are able to make meaningful investments in sustainable transportation while keeping Cornwall’s contribution manageable. 🤝

These new electric minibuses represent an important step toward decarbonizing our transit fleet while continuing to improve accessibility, connectivity, and service for residents across our community. 🌱🔋

A big thank you to the amazing folks at T3 Transit, and of course, our regional partners, for continuing to move public transportation forward in Cornwall and across PEI! 🚏

Had a fantastic evening at Member of Parliament Heath MacDonald’s annual lobster dinner! 🦞🇨🇦 It was also Heath's birthday 🎂 so another happy birthday 🎂 to him!

It was great catching up with so many friends and community leaders, and I especially enjoyed a wonderful chat with Member of Parliament for Fredericton–Oromocto and former Juno Award winner, David Myles 🎶👏

MP Myles’ riding holds a special place in my heart. As a student - and graduate - at St. Thomas University in Fredericton from 1999 to 2001, I had the opportunity to work on former MP Andy Scott’s re-election campaign. Andy was successful that year and went on to serve Canada in several important cabinet portfolios.

More importantly, Andy played a major role in encouraging me to stay involved in politics during a time when I had become disillusioned with the process and the events happening in the world. I’ll never forget his advice: “The best way to change things is by having a seat at the table.”

Those words have stayed with me ever since.

Rest in peace, Andy Scott. ❤️

All the best to MP David Myles, Minister Heath MacDonald, and everyone working to make our communities and our country stronger. 😊🇨🇦

Emergency Preparedness Week (May 3–9, 2026) is an important opportunity for all of us to reflect on how ready we are to respond to emergencies and to better understand the risks our community may face. 🚨🌍

As Chair of the Town of Cornwall PEI’s Municipal and Emergency Services (MES) Committee, I’m proud of the ongoing work being done to strengthen our preparedness and resilience. 💪🏽🏘️

During last night's MES meeting, we had the opportunity to meet with our emergency preparedness consultant, Aaron Campbell, and begin planning for an upcoming tabletop exercise. 🧠📋 This exercise will bring together Town staff, Councillors, and our emergency management partners to work through three mock emergency scenarios, helping us sharpen our planning, coordination, and response strategies. 🔄🚧

At the same meeting, we were also pleased to host representatives from the North River Fire Department (NRFD). 🚒 Kevin Bernard and Jonathan Arsenault provided an insightful overview of the incredible work being done by their team, including updates on their budget, future capital investments, call volumes, and projections for the year ahead. 📊📈

Their dedication is truly remarkable:
🚒 36 volunteer members 👩‍🚒👨‍🚒
🚒 376 combined years of firefighting experience 🧯
🚒 351 hours per member in 2025⏱️
🚒 11,588 total volunteer hours last year 🙌
🚒 269 calls responded to in '25, including over 100 right here in Cornwall 📍

To our friends, family, and neighbours who serve with NRFD—thank you. ❤️ Your commitment, professionalism, and volunteer spirit make a real difference in keeping our community safe. 🏡🔥

Emergency preparedness is a shared responsibility. 🤝 I encourage everyone to take some time this week to review your own plans and ensure you and your family are ready. ✔️🧰

I want to take a moment to recognize and thank Nelson Kennedy for his many years of service to the Cornwall community. 🙌

Back in the day, I believe in the 80s or 90s (?), Nelson owned the Cornwall Esso, which was operated by another local legend, Cecil Frizzell. The Esso was certainly one of the true hubs of our town at the time. ⛽️ It was more than just a gas station; it was a place where people connected, shared stories, and built community. 🤝 Nelson told me a great story about hiring a couple of young whippersnappers - and neighbours - Lee & Lindsay Drake to paint the Esso for him. I'm not sure if they painted since, haha?!

Nelson is also the proud father of two of Cornwall’s finest — Brad and Bonnie Kennedy — who were two of the coolest kids in the Cornwall area back in the day.👏

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of Nelson picking me up and chauffeuring me to Reliable Motors. 🚗 We even took a quick detour past his old home in Elliott Park, where he shared some great stories from years gone by. 🏡 Nelson was impressed by how much Cornwall has grown and developed over the years.

Moments like that are a reminder that it’s people like Nelson who helped build Cornwall into the strong, connected community we have today. ❤️

Thank you, Nelson, for your years of dedication and for everything you’ve contributed over the years. 👏😊

It was a pleasure to serve over 80 Cornwall-area seniors at Town of Cornwall PEI weekly Seniors Lunch today! 😊

A big thank you to our event sponsor, Costco, and their Marketing Representative, Julian, for providing their delicious and world-famous hot dogs 🌭—they were a big hit! Julian also shared a helpful presentation on the benefits of a Costco membership, which our seniors really appreciated. Her Worship, Mayor McCourt, and I thanked Julian and Costco Wholesale Canada for the kind support, and we certainly look forward to future partnerships.

This wonderful weekly event is made possible by the Town’s Recreation Department, who do an absolutely amazing job preparing the meals each week. Huge thanks to Manager Kim and her fantastic team, along with our volunteers, for their continued dedication 👏

Our Seniors Lunch continues to bring together residents from across Cornwall, providing not only great food and nourishment, but just as importantly, a chance for connection and fellowship ❤️ It was especially meaningful to spend time with my friend's mothers — Carol Storey and Gail Feehan — two wonderful women who were always so kind to me growing up in Cornwall.

There were plenty of laughs shared today—and that’s what it’s all about. Already looking forward to the next one! 😊

💰💵 Following Mayor McCourt’s recent interview with CBC, and my other favourite councilor Cory’s post from yesterday, I’m excited to build on their excellent comments and share some of the great news from the Town of Cornwall PEI’s 2026–2027 Budget that was recently approved by Council! ✅

💼📊Balanced & Responsible Budget
The Town has adopted an operating budget of approximately $6.8 million, along with a $2.77 million💧Water & Sewer Utility 🪠budget, ensuring strong service delivery while maintaining sound financial management.

💰🏡📉Stable (and Leading) Tax Rates
Good news for residents — our long-standing, non-commericial tax rate for residents remains unchanged at $0.46 per $100 of assessment.

📊🏆 Based on municipal comparisons, Cornwall continues to have the lowest residential tax rate among PEI’s five largest municipalities, reinforcing our commitment to affordability for residents, while also remaining one of the 🚀 fastest growing municipalities in the entire country!

📜✅ A Policy That Continues to Deliver
During my first term on Council (2010–2014), I was proud to successfully advocate for the adoption of a non-resident tax rate. Back then, this tax model was somewhat controversial and not widely implemented across PEI. Fast forward to 2026, and this model has proved effective, based on successive Councils having continued this approach. It has been vital in ensuring affordability to our residents while also strengthening our financial position. 💡

🌟🏘️Continued Investment in Our Community

This budget supports important priorities, including:
🏒🎉🏀Recreation programs and community events (e.g., Civic Centre; parade float)
🚓🚒👮‍♀️Policing, fire, and public safety (e.g., RCMP & NRFD; E-Watch; by-law reviews)
🚧🛠️ Public Works and infrastructure (e.g., PW shop & vehicles; sidewalks; parking lots)

🚌📍Expanded Transit Service

🚏🗺️We are continuing to heavily invest in public transit, including expanded routes and improved service levels, helping residents better connect across our growing community and the region.

🚧🏗️💵 Capital Investments

Council approved over $4.4 million in capital projects, including:
🚶‍♂️🚴‍♀️🌿ATT/sidewalk/trail developments (e.g., 26-27: TFSC + Cornwall Rd.; 27-28: Ferry Rd.; 28-29: Hillside Meadows Dr.)
🛝⚽Parks and recreation upgrades (e.g., Lowther Dr. + West River Ests.; TFSC infield)
🔹🚜🛠️Equipment and infrastructure improvements (e.g., pool deck/liner/cover; rink liner; pickleball)
🔹🏢📐Planning for future community growth (transit; IT; new recreation centre)

🔭➡️ Looking Ahead
A key project identified for 2027–2028 is a proposed sidewalk/Active Transportation Trail (ATT) along Ferry Road (between Hillside Meadow Drive and Arbor Lane) and in 28-29, another ATT on Hillside — all very important and long-requested investments in safety, connectivity, and active living.🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️🛣️

Council is always cognizant of being responsible stewards of the public purse, and we take this duty with the utmost care. As Her Worship mentioned during her CBC interview, this budget reflects a thoughtful and balanced approach — keeping taxes low, investing in services, and planning for the future — all while continuing to make the Town of Cornwall one of the most affordable and desirable communities in PEI. ❤️

If you have any questions about the budget, feel free to reach out anytime! 🤝

It was a pleasure to meet with Anna Gainey, Canada’s Secretary of State for Children and Youth 🤝

I was grateful for the opportunity to sit down with the Secretary alongside my two children 👨‍👧‍👦, plus PEI Liberal Party leader, Robert Mitchell, and several other inspiring young leaders, where we had a meaningful discussion about some of the most pressing challenges facing children and youth today — including affordability 💰, food security 🥗, and the realities facing post-secondary students 🎓

During our conversation, I strongly advocated for increased federal investment in municipalities to support capital projects that directly benefit families 🏗️ In particular, I highlighted the need for enhanced funding for multi-use community/recreational centres 🏒🏀 which can be designed to accommodate child care and youth spaces 👶. These types of facilities are a growing priority for residents here in Cornwall, and they play a critical role in supporting healthy, connected communities 🏡

We also discussed the rising cost of food 🛒 I encouraged the Government of Canada to closely examine the root causes of increasing grocery prices. I was encouraged that there was agreement that fostering greater competition — in the retail grocery sector and across industries — could help bring costs down for families 📉

On a personal note, it was interesting to learn that Secretary Gainey and I share some similar early experiences in politics 🗳️ We both got our start at a young age through volunteering, supporting local candidates, and gaining experience in Ottawa through the federal student work program before moving into roles supporting federal cabinet ministers 🇨🇦

As a mom of three, Secretary Gainey is a strong role model for young people — especially young women — across the country 👩‍👧‍👦 I was particularly pleased that my daughter had the chance to meet and speak with someone in such an important leadership role 🌟 I’ve always believed that seeing strong leaders firsthand helps young people believe in what’s possible 💫

Thank you again to Secretary Gainey for the thoughtful discussion and for her commitment to supporting children, youth, and families across Canada 🙏

03/27/2026

As the work week comes to a close, I’ve found myself reflecting on the enormous losses our community has experienced over the past days, weeks, and even months. So many loved ones gone far too soon. I know I’m not alone in saying I’ve shed more tears this past year than I ever have before. If you’re feeling the same way, you’re not alone.

With that said, the arrival of Spring this week gives me some hope that brighter days are ahead. 🌱

After attending my friend Mark McLane’s funeral service on Tuesday, I’ve been thinking a lot about just how much he meant to so many of us.

His service was a powerful reminder of the kind of man he was—kind, thoughtful, and deeply committed to others. He lived a life of service, but more importantly, he was a devoted husband to Margie, a proud and loving father to Maria, Bethany, and Katherine, a wonderful son to Dave, and a great brother to Kristina. That love for his family was clear to everyone who knew him.

Mark wasn’t just a dedicated public servant as PEI’s Health Minister—he was also my neighbour and a true friend. Some of the moments I’ll miss most are the simple ones—chatting about yard work, snow clearing, and the everyday routines of life. Those conversations were easy, genuine, and meant more than I probably ever said.

I’ll never forget the first time we met. It was shortly after we moved into the neighbourhood in the summer of 2020. I was out for a jog on a sunny Saturday morning when I saw Mark sitting out on his deck. He gave a wave, and I remember thinking, “that must be the famous Mark McLane I’ve been hearing about.” So I turned into his driveway to introduce myself.

That quick introduction turned into an hour-long conversation filled with laughs, like we’d known each other for years. That was Mark—he had a way of making everyone feel instantly comfortable, like an old friend. And that big, larger-than-life laugh… that’s what I think I’ll miss the most.

I’m incredibly grateful for his friendship and for the many memories we shared, both big and small.

Mark will be deeply missed. My continued thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Margie, the girls, and all who knew and loved him.

Rest easy, brother. 💙

I was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of my cousin, Jeremy Crosby.

Jeremy dedicated many years of service to the Town of Stratford, including serving as Chief Administrative Officer. He was a committed and respected public servant whose work helped support the growth and success of the community. His professionalism, leadership, and dedication to municipal service made a meaningful impact on Stratford and the many people he worked with over the years. 🏛️

Beyond his professional contributions, Jeremy will be remembered as a kind and compassionate person who loved his family deeply. ❤️

My heartfelt condolences go out to Jeremy’s partner Cindy, his children, Ella and Regan, his parents Blair and Barb, his sister Clarissa, and all of his extended family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. My thoughts are with you all. 🙏

Rest in peace, Jeremy. You will be greatly missed. 🕊️
