Walbran Land Defenders Receive a Warm Send-Off to Court

On the morning of April 9 at 9:00 am, around 75 people gathered on the steps of the Victoria Courthouse to stand in support of the 12 Walbran land defenders facing a court decision that day.

Beloved Pachedaht Elder Bill Jones spoke about his journey from apathy to deep connection with the forest, and his commitment to do whatever it takes to protect it. Behind him stood a powerful image: a “cookie” from a 750-year-old Fairy Creek tree, its rings marking centuries of life now reduced to a stump.

The gathering was filled with music and spirit. The Raging Grannies brought their signature wit and satire in song, followed by Bill Johnston leading a rousing chorus of The Last Stand Rag. MC Jackie Larkin grounded the moment, reminding us why we were there—to defend the last rapidly disappearing old-growth forests, with the Walbran land defenders on the front lines.

Several of the Walbran 12 introduced themselves, and community members were invited to share reflections. A strong current of gratitude flowed through the circle—honouring those who have put their bodies on the line in defence of the Earth.

Voices rose again in song as Q led beloved Fairy Creek songs like Tall Trees. Charlotte (Flipflop) and Rico brought the beat with the Women Warrior Song, and Bill Johnston returned to lead Seeds by Julien Taylor:

“They tried to bury us; they didn’t know we were seeds.”

The next court date is May 25—we hope to see you there in continued solidarity in the courthouse.

📅 Thursday April 9th

9-10 AM – Gratitude Circle (Courthouse Steps)
10-11 AM – Attend Courthouse Hearing in Support of the Land Protectors

Call to Support the Walbran Valley Land Defenders

We are calling on the public to come support the land defenders in court on Thursday, April 9th

Twelve land protectors arrested during the current blockades in the Walbran Valley will be appearing before a judge.

Stand with the twelve who held their ground to protect ancient forests from clearcutting. Make their reasonable and urgent actions visible to the courts by showing up with gratitude, presence, and support.

The Elder for Ancient Trees will be hosting the circle come share words of gratitude to the land defenders as they stand before the courts for the second time.

British Columbia’s old-growth forests are being logged at an alarming rate—the equivalent of 147 soccer fields every day. Time is running out.
Their actions were reasonable.
Their urgency was necessary.

From 9, we will gather in circle on the courthouse steps to honour and support the land defenders before they face the judge.

Bring your signs.
Bring your prayers.
Bring your songs.
Bring your gratitude to share in the circle together.

From 10-11am, those who are able are invited to attend the court hearing in support of the twelve land protectors.

Come join the circle.

🎵🏹 Music and the Arts are the sharpest arrows in the quiver of civil disobedience. 🧡💪🏾🌲

These forests are some of the most biodiverse and carbon-rich ecosystems on Earth, yet they are still being logged today. The NDP are treating BC like a resource colony, clear cutting old growth forest like there’s no tomorrow. This must end.

The message from this movement has always been simple: protect what little remains.

📢 Tell the BC government to end old-growth logging now:

🚨⚠️ has just green-lit logging of ancient yellow cedar trees within 30 m of the Ridgeline of Fairy Creek as part of cut block 8027.

Now, Teal Cedar has approval to start logging near the Fairy Creek watershed. This cut blocks aren’t active yet which means cutting won’t start tomorrow. It could be weeks or it could be years.

Happy international day of forests folks.

Prayer Circle & Potluck Community Dinner in Support for Chiyokten

WSÁNEĆ land defender, Coast Salish storyteller, and Indigenous wisdom keeper Paul Chiyokten Wagner has a nine-day trial scheduled at the Victoria Courthouse in March 2027, seeking accountability from the RCMP and the Governments of British Columbia and Canada for his wrongful arrest at Fairy Creek in August 2021.

To help support this next step in the legal process, community members are organizing a Prayer Circle and Potluck Community Dinner.

This gathering is also an opportunity for the greater community to honour, support and come learn about the court case.

For many years, Chiyokten has stood in defense of the land, sharing teachings about natural law, Indigenous sovereignty, and our responsibilities to the Earth.

He stood for the ancient forests at Fairy Creek, helping guide and teach many who came to stand for the trees and learn about natural law. Through his teachings, Chiyokten reminds us that our tree relatives provide a home for the salmon people, the animal people, the plant people, and the insect people, and that all life is interconnected.

Chiyokten has long called for an end to the era of fossil fuel foolishness in the Salish Sea through Indigenous wisdom, understanding, and solidarity. Through his work — including building coastal canoes with Tribal youth and sharing traditional knowledge — he continues to pass on culture, teachings, and connection to future generations.
