You have probably heard of hibernation, but have you heard of hyperphagia?
In fall, bears enter a period of intense eating to build the fat reserves they need for winter denning. A bear may need to increase its body weight by approximately 30% before winter.
This search for food can bring bears closer to homes, properties and communities. Help prevent human–bear conflicts by securing attractants around your home and property.

UPDATE from BC Wildfire:
The Matthew Creek Wildfire (N11020) Area Restriction has been reduced in size. The recent downturn in weather has bolstered weeks of hard work by firefighters, heavy equipment and aerial resources. As a result of these efforts combined with the more favourable weather conditions over the last few days, fire activity has been reduced. To reflect changing conditions, the BC Wildfire Service is reducing the area restriction on the Matthew Creek wildfire (N11020) effective September 3, 2026. While the area restriction is being reduced in size, the need to protect public in areas of this wildfire continues.

Tires are one of the few household goods that we DON'T want you to bring to any of our transfer stations or landfills. Tire Stewardship BC collects an eco-fee when you buy tires to pay for the transportation and recycling of old tires.

There are depots that take up to four tires at a time, free of charge, throughout the East Kootenay. For example, there are 13 depots in Cranbrook, five in Invermere, and four in Fernie.

To find a depot near you, visit www.tsbc.ca
