The Village of Cremona is currently undergoing a provincial viability review. The recently released Viability Review Report outlines the anticipated impacts on municipal services if Cremona were to dissolve and become a hamlet within Mountain View County.
For the Cremona Municipal Library, the report states:
The report goes on to state that Parkland Regional Library System has indicated it would not manage the Cremona Library as a satellite branch and that residents could instead access library services in Water Valley, Carstairs or Didsbury.
We want our community to understand that closure is not an automatic consequence of dissolution.
If Cremona dissolves, the current Cremona Municipal Library Board would cease to exist because it was established by the Village. However, dissolution does not require the library to close. Mountain View County could choose to establish a library board that would allow public library service to continue in Cremona.
For 55 years, the Cremona Municipal Library has served Cremona and the surrounding rural community. Just this past July 1, we celebrated that milestone alongside community members and government representatives who recognize more than five decades of local library service.
Our library is more than books. It is a gathering place, a quiet space, a place for children and families, and a source of information, technology and community connection.
Throughout the year, the Library provides services including:
-Children's and youth programming, including STEAM Club, early-literacy programming and the Summer Reading Program
-Adult programming and community services, including Book Club, technology assistance and English-language learning support
-Free public computer and internet access, printing and technology services
-Books, digital resources and access to materials from libraries throughout Alberta
-A welcoming public space available to residents of Cremona and the surrounding area

The outcome described in the Viability Review Report is not the only possible outcome.
If continuing to have a public library in Cremona is important to you, we encourage you to let Mountain View County Council know.
Tell Council what the Cremona Municipal Library means to you, how you or your family use it, and whether you believe local library service should continue if Cremona becomes a hamlet.
