Henry’s Law – Carbon Monoxide Alarms

On May 5, 2026, the Government of Saskatchewan introduced Henry’s Law, which updates the building code requirements for carbon monoxide alarms.

The law is named after Henry Losco, who passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning in Regina in December 2025.

Starting November 1, 2026, carbon monoxide alarms will be required in all multi-unit residential buildings, including:

Apartments, Condominiums, Houses with secondary suites, other buildings with multiple residential suites.

This requirement applies regardless of when the building was built or last renovated.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless and poisonous gas that can be produced by fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, fireplaces, stoves, dryers and water heaters. Vehicle exhaust can also produce carbon monoxide.

A properly installed and maintained CO alarm can provide an early warning, allowing residents to leave the building and call 911.
