As a result of a complete fire ban enacted by BC Wildfire Service, the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and its surrounding partner agencies will be issuing the same ban, effective Thursday, May 7 at 12:00 noon.

Campfires will not be allowed throughout the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction, including all provincial parks, crown land, and private property. This ban also includes the suspension of the beach fire program at Goose Spit Park.

The following area fire departments are involved in the complete ban:
• Comox Fire Rescue
• Courtenay Fire Department
• Cumberland Fire Rescue
• Denman Island Fire Rescue
• F***y Bay Volunteer Fire Department
• Hornby Island Fire Rescue
• Merville Fire Department
• Mount Washington Fire Department
• Oyster River Fire Rescue
• Ships Point Volunteer Fire Department
• Union Bay Fire Rescue

The ban does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or portable campfire devices that use briquettes, liquid, or gaseous fuel, provided they are CSA or ULC approved, and the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.

To further reduce wildfire risk in the Comox Valley, a smoking ban has been issued in all CVRD parks, and all fire rings will be removed from designated parks.

From your volunteers of the Cumberland Fire Rescue Society, we want to wish everyone a Happy International Women’s Day! 👩‍🚒💪

On this special day, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible dedication of our female volunteer firefighters. These amazing women step up every day, whether it’s battling blazes, providing life-saving rescue efforts, educating our community on fire safety, or getting up before dawn to show support for other volunteers and partner-agencies. Their strength, compassion, and unwavering commitment inspire us all and make our team stronger.

We’re proud to stand alongside them in supporting and safeguarding you year-round. Let’s celebrate the trailblazers who break barriers and keep our community safe!

Happy International Women’s Day! 🎉🚒

We’re thrilled to share this important update from the Government of British Columbia: enhanced health protections for firefighters across the province, including our dedicated volunteers at Cumberland Fire Rescue Society!

Under the expanded Workers’ Compensation Act, eight new cancers are now covered under presumptive protections—meaning faster access to care without the burden of proving work-related causes. This includes tracheal, bronchial, laryngeal, nose, pharyngeal cancers, skin cancer, mesothelioma, and soft tissue sarcoma. Plus, the service requirement for esophageal cancer has been reduced from 20 to 15 years.

As volunteers who proudly serve our Cumberland community, battling everything from structure fires to increasingly intense wildfires, this recognition of our occupational risks is a game-changer. It honors the sacrifices we make and ensures better support for our health and families.

A huge thank you to Premier David Eby, Minister Jennifer Whiteside, the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Association, and all advocates who made this possible. We’re grateful for the strongest protections in Canada and committed to keeping our community safe.

Stay safe out there!
