A Nova Scotia firefighters' organization is being celebrated at the QEII Health Sciences Centre after the group made a significant donation, creating a chain reaction benefitting patients in multiple units.
For years, staff in the burn unit at the Halifax Infirmary have wanted specialized monitors.
The machines offer a way to keep an eye on burn patients who need intermediate care. Without them, the patients were stuck in the intensive care unit, tying up much-needed beds.
Just over a year ago, the Nova Scotia Fire Fighters Burn Treatment Society got wind of that need, and kicked off one of its biggest fundraising efforts.
"This was a continuation of things we've done to help out," said David Collier, a retired firefighter and chair of the board at the society.
"Firefighters across the province contributed to this to make it happen."
The society, founded in 1983, typically raises money for smaller items for burn victims, such as specialized clothing that isn't covered by insurance. Collier said they were motivated to do something big.

Firefighters held curling and bowling events, hosted barbecues, and the burn treatment society raised money through a weekly 50/50 draw.
The money added up, totalling $132,000, which the society donated to the QEII Foundation to buy the monitoring equipment.
With the equipment in place, there is now a new four-bed unit for patients who require intermediate care within the burn unit.
"We just wanted to thank them so much for the investment," said Manelon Medalla, the burn unit's health services manager.
"These beds are always going to be filled. They're never, ever vacant."
Medalla said the machines couldn't have come at a better time, as the unit has been busier in the last few months than staff have ever seen.

Medalla said the firefighters haven't just helped his unit — intensive care is also benefitting now that four beds have been freed up for other patients who often come from the emergency department.
"They've invested in safer patient care, improved hospital capacity and better outcomes for patients," he said.
Laura Kennedy, community engagement officer with the QEII Foundation, said the firefighters' efforts over the years have created an "extraordinary legacy" with a "lasting impact for patients and families."
Collier, who spent 37 years as a firefighter with the Department of National Defence, said his work with the burn treatment society helps balance out the tough situations he witnessed in his career.
"It's a way of giving back," he said. "It gives you a feeling of pride to know that you've helped out."
