This coming Monday, September 7th , please join Good Robot Brewing and the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia for a fun-filled evening of Goodwill Trivia! 

Trivia starts at 7 pm (with doors opening for guests at 6 pm) at Good Robot Taproom, located at 2736 Robie Street in Halifax. $1 from each beverage sold will be donated to the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia's programs, services, housing, and advocacy work, which are essential to supporting women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals on their pathways to healing, safety, personal empowerment, and reaching goals.

On Friday, September 25th, from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Weldon Law Building, please join us for a panel centred on navigating the legal system in the wake of violence victimization and loss. The panel will also be livestreamed from our page: https://www.facebook.com/efrysocietyhalifax

The panel, held in loving memory of Logan Alexandra Russell, who was tragically killed in an act of intimate partner violence in November of 2025, will be the second of three panels supported through the Logan Alexandra Russell Fund. Intended to honour Logan’s beautiful life and loving, empathetic nature, while also striving to protect others from the violence that caused her death, the fund will contribute to intimate partner violence prevention efforts, focused on both education and the fostering of meaningful, non-judgmental, and empowering connections and collaborations.

Logan Alexandra Russell was “the girl who turned every room into a stage, and every heart she touched into a safer, happier place.”

But she was not safe. On November 23rd, 2025, Logan tragically lost her life in an act of horrifying violence perpetrated by her male partner. Our hearts are broken for Logan, her many family members and friends, and all those who loved and were loved by her. 

Beyond the violence inflicted by her partner, Logan was failed by systems that should have kept her safe. Since our province declared intimate partner violence to be an epidemic in September of last year, at least eight women in Nova Scotia, including Logan, have been killed by their male partners. However, there has not been an epidemic-level response to investing in intersectional, root cause-centered intimate partner violence prevention strategy.

In loving memory of Logan, the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia, in partnership with her family, established The Logan Alexandra Russell Fund.

Intended to honour Logan’s beautiful life and loving, empathetic nature, while also striving to protect others from the violence that caused her death, the fund contributes to intimate partner violence prevention efforts, focused on both education and the fostering of meaningful, non-judgmental, and empowering connections and collaborations.

We are thrilled to share that on Saturday, November 7th, from 7 pm to 11 pm at Garrison Seaport, we will be hosting our fifth annual Fall fundraiser, "An Evening for E Fry"!

This will be an exciting, fun-filled evening featuring impactful speeches, a silent auction, an airline ticket raffle, a photobooth, bar service, delicious hors d'oeuvres, and more, all while supporting the most vulnerable and marginalized women, girls, and gender-diverse people in our province.

This year's event will specifically focus on our record suspension program, which has played an essential role in helping our clients overcome barriers to self-sufficiency, healing, personal empowerment, and community reintegration.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day.

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland NS remembers and mourns those who have been lost to substance use fatalities, including opioid poisoning, and remains committed to supporting individuals who are living with substance use concerns. We strive to build awareness of Canada’s high prevalence of substance use concerns and resulting harms, which we recognize as a public health crisis that is not only systemically caused, but has a systemic solution.

A total of 5,608 individuals died from opioid poisoning in Canada in 2025. Spanning January of 2016 to December of 2025, the number of deaths resulting from opioid poisoning was over 56,000.

On August 20th, we hosted a fantastic braiding workshop for clients and community members! Those who participated had a blast learning how to braid from the incredibly talented master stylist and workshop instructor Breanne Williams. Additionally, the afternoon was a great opportunity for connection and community-building, which is at the heart of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland NS's work. 

Thank you to Breanne for sharing her skills and knowledge; Shanice and Winner for organizing the event; and everyone who attended! This afternoon, Pivotal Boxing & Self Defence hosted an incredible boxing and self-defense class, all in support of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia!

The class was fun-filled, high energy, and educational. Instructors Holly and Sarah shared their knowledge and skills with enthusiasm and patience, leaving those who participated feeling empowered, confident, and fueled from an awesome workout!

We are beyond grateful to share that the class brought in $320, going towards the essential programs and services we provide for our clients. Thank you to Holly, Sarah, and everyone at Pivotal; Farrah from our fundraising committee for helping to organize; and everyone who participated!
