RCMP service dog Marook tracks down armed suspect wanted in assault

On June 2, at approximately 9:10 p.m., RCMP were called to a break and enter that was occurring at a residence on the 100-block of 1st Avenue Southwest in Dauphin.

Officers responded immediately and learned a male suspect had smashed multiple windows, broke into the residence and assaulted a 24-year-old male inside the home. The suspect then fled.

The victim declined medical attention.

About 25 minutes later, officers located the suspect, who took off running after being advised he was under arrest. RCMP Police Dog Services were called to the location, near the intersection of 3rd Street Southwest and 4th Avenue Southwest.

The suspect, who was found hiding in hedges, turned towards an officer with a metal edged weapon. Marook, a police service dog, was deployed and apprehended him.

The suspect was arrested and searched, with a blade from a lawnmower found and seized by officers at the scene. The suspect was then taken to hospital for treatment of multiple dog bites, then taken into custody.

Marook was uninjured.

Sidney Nepinak, 35, of Dauphin is charged with:
• Assault causing bodily harm;
• Break and enter;
• Assaulting a police officer with a weapon;
• Resisting arrest;
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
• Mischief over $5,000; and
• Failure to comply with a release order condition.

He was remanded into custody.

On May 29, at 2:50 p.m., Dauphin RCMP were on patrol when they saw a male breaching his probation by visiting an address he was prohibited from attending.

The officer stopped and arrested the suspect outside an address on the 100-block of Main Street North in Dauphin. The suspect resisted, prompting additional officers to be called to the scene – allowing the male to be safely taken into custody.

The suspect was charged with:
• Resisting arrest; and
• Failure to comply x2.

He was released the following day on an undertaking.

On June 2, at approximately 10 a.m., RCMP were on patrol when they located the same person at the same location. The male was arrested again, this time without incident.

In addition to the previous charges, Christopher Brazeaux, 32, is now charged with:
• Failure to comply with an undertaking condition; and
• Failure to comply with his probation order.

He was remanded into custody, with his next court appearance set for today in Dauphin.

On May 29, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP responded to a report of two males fighting on Highway 68, in the RM of Alonsa.

Officers responded and did not find a fight in progress but did locate a male who appeared to be intoxicated and had almost been hit by a passing vehicle. After the male asked for a ride home, officers called one of his relatives and arranged to drop him off at a location in Ste. Rose du Lac.

When officers arrived at the address and met the relative, the individual became agitated, said he would walk home and began walking towards the road. Officers them moved to arrest the male under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act, which sparked an altercation that resulted in one of the officers being pushed to the ground.

The suspect was taken into custody.

A 29-year-old Grandview male faces charges of:
• Assaulting a police officer; and
• Resisting a peace officer.

He was released on an undertaking the following morning.

On May 30, at approximately 7:05 a.m., RCMP responded to a report of an individual breaking into a shed on a residential property in Dauphin.

The incident occurred on 3rd Avenue Northeast, when an unknown male was seen inside the shed. The suspect then fled the scene.

RCMP responding to the scene were able to locate the suspect a short distance away, hiding inside a dumpster. He was arrested without incident.

Brendan Komarnicki, 38, of Swan River is charged with:
• Break and enter; and
• Mischief under $5,000.

He was remanded into custody.

On June 1, at approximately 3:10 a.m., RCMP were called to two fires that occurred at a residential group home on Whitmore Avenue in Dauphin.

The Dauphin Fire Department also attended the incident, which saw fires occur in different areas of the building.

Based on the circumstances, RCMP believe the fires to be suspicious in nature and are investigating.

On May 28, at approximately 8:55am, Dauphin RCMP were dispatched to a single vehicle collision by Moon Lake in Riding Mountain National Park.

Officers attended immediately with EMS and Park Wardens.

First responders extricated the lone occupant, a 76-year-old female. The driver was then transported to hospital in Dauphin with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was attempting to pass another vehicle when it went off the road, collided into the trees, knocking one over on to the road.

The highway was closed for approximately 1 hour as a result.

The matter remains under investigation.

On May 27, at approximately 2 a.m., RCMP received a report of a disturbance at a residence on Sixth Avenue Southwest in Dauphin.

Officers arrived and found two people – a 68-year-old female and 21-year-old male – had been assaulted by another female inside the home. RCMP told the suspect she was being arrested, at which point she resisted and attempted to bite an officer’s arm. She later kicked the police vehicle while officers worked to place her inside.

No injuries that required medical treatment occurred.

A 19-year-old Dauphin female faces charges of:
• Assaulting a police officer;
• Resisting arrest; and
• Assault x2.

The suspect has been released on conditions with a pending court date.

On May 23, at approximately 1:50 a.m., RCMP received a report of a break and enter occurring at a storage locker facility on Industrial Road in Dauphin.

Officers responded immediately and located two suspects inside a vacant unit. A number of tools that can be used as break-in instruments were found inside one of the suspect’s backpacks.

Two Dauphin residents –35-year-old Kyle Sutherland and 33-year-old Geena Parenteau – are charged with:
• Break and enter;
• Possessing break-in instruments; and
• Mischief under $5,000.

Both were released from custody the following day by a justice on a release order.

On May 21, at approximately 6:30 p.m., RCMP observed a suspicious truck carrying several bicycles pull into the yard of a property on Brown Avenue East, in Dauphin.

Officers learned the vehicle had been stolen from a Winnipeg address. Two people that were in and around the vehicle – a male and a female – were arrested and searched, with a small amount of methamphetamine recovered from the female’s handbag.

Mason Kalinchuk, 34, of Dauphin is charged with:
• Drug possession; and
• Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Kalinchuk was granted a release order by a justice.

A 36-year-old Winnipeg female also faces drug possession and possession of property obtained by crime charges. She was released on an undertaking.

On May 23, at approximately 5:45 p.m., RCMP received a report of a disturbance at a residence in Dauphin.

Officers responded and found a male youth inside, with smashed dishes on the kitchen floor. RCMP arrested the suspect. While taking the suspect to the police vehicle, the youth suddenly flung his body forward and intentionally head butted the rear driver side window, breaking it with his forehead.

An ambulance was called and the suspect was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries.

A 17-year-old Dauphin male faces charges of mischief under $5,000. He was released on an appearance notice.
