Please join us on Tuesday 11 August at 7 p.m. for an author reading by current Berton House Writer-in-Residence Cody Caetano.

Cody is a writer and literary agent from the Pinaymootang First Nation. His memoir, Half-Bads in White Regalia, won the 2023 Indigenous Voices Award for Best Published Prose, was shortlisted for the 2023 Edna Staebler Award, and longlisted for the 2023 Toronto Book Award, the 2023 Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour, and Canada Reads 2023. It was named one of the best books of the year by The Globe and Mail and CBC Books. Excerpts of the manuscript received the 2020 Indigenous Voices Award for Best Unpublished Prose. While in Dawson, Cody is at work on a novel.

Helen is an Indigenous spoken word poet, grassroots activist, leader and social worker from the Prophet River First Nation. She is of Dane-Zaa, Nehiyaw, Métis, and European descent. Helen has published a number of poems, short pieces of creative non-fiction, and is the author of two best-selling books, In My Own Moccasins and Becoming a Matriarch.

Helen’s second book, Becoming a Matriarch, was released in August 2023 and was a National Best Seller, going on to win the Jim Deva BC Yukon Book Prize, was a finalist for a 2024 Governor Generals Award in Non-Fiction, and long listed for Canada Reads 2025.

Alas, the Library's longstanding Double Bob Potluck in celebration of the births of Robbie Burns and Robert Service scheduled for January 24th has been cancelled due to the ongoing plumbing issues in Dawson and the school building.

As the bard himself said, ""The best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley."

We hope to have it back next year.
