A big thank you to our Greens Crew!

There’s a lot that goes into keeping Dawson’s outdoor recreation spaces ready for the community each summer, and this crew is big reason they are ready for you to use!

Over the course of the season, our Greens Crew helps maintain nine greenspaces, two ball fields, four playgrounds, sports courts and portions of our trail network, while also supporting pool operations, recreation programming, community events and plenty of other jobs that come up along the way.

This summer was an especially busy one. The grass seemed to grow as fast as we could cut it, and our crew was working short-staffed for portions of the season. At the same time, they were constantly balancing the day-to-day maintenance our spaces need with supporting programs, tournaments, events and all the other activities happening across our facilities.

That balancing act is a big part of the job. One day might be spent getting a ball field or park ready for an event, the next catching up on mowing, trimming and maintenance somewhere else — and often it’s a little bit of everything at once.

We want to take the chance to also recognize our summer students: Mason Jordan and Spencer Dewell, who both returned to work with us this year. Having local youth working alongside our regular staff brings energy and local knowledge to the team, while giving young people an opportunity to build experience and make a real contribution to the community.

And while summer is winding down, the work certainly isn’t. As fall approaches, the crew will begin phasing out our summer outdoor operations and turning their attention to the next big jobs: winterizing the pool and mobilizing to install the ice at the Recreation Centre.

A huge thank you to the whole crew for the work they’ve put in this summer to keep Dawson’s parks, fields and recreation spaces maintained and ready for our community to use!

This year, 40 young players took to the field as part of Minor Ball aka Dawson City Whisky Jacks — with 28 kids in the Grade 1–4 group and another 12 in Grades 5–9. For a community our size, that’s an incredible turnout!

The City of Dawson is happy to facilitate field use and support the program, but minor ball in Dawson is truly a volunteer-run initiative. Coaching 40 kids through a season is a huge undertaking, and we want to give a massive thank you to Spruce Gerberding, Tom, Katie Pearse & Susan Pearse, and Jay J. Flynn for stepping up and making it happen.

A big thank you as well to the many volunteers who supported our younger program throughout the season. Hannah Hawkins was there every time, as was Ben Shore, and Jennifer kept everyone going with freezies on more than a few occasions! We also want to recognize the supporters of our senior ball group: Louis Gerberding, Dave Fraser, and the late Charlie Taylor, along with the many parents who regularly jumped in and lent a hand. It really does take a community of volunteers to make minor ball happen in Dawson.

One of this year’s highlights was seeing our older Whisky Jacks travel to Whitehorse to compete in a Yukon-wide tournament — a great opportunity for our young players to represent Dawson and play against teams from around the territory.

Fastball is alive and well in Dawson City. Our young players have some great examples to follow in the (Champion) Dawson City Dingbats and (Up and Coming) Dawson City Lambs, and thanks to the volunteers putting in the time at the grassroots level, another generation of Dawson kids is getting the chance to play.

Thank you to all the coaches, volunteers, parents and players for a fantastic season.

And that’s a wrap on the 4th Annual Golden Grouse Disc Golf Tournament! 2026 Golden Grouse Disc Golf Tournament

The Golden Grouse is an annual celebration of disc golf in Dawson City — bringing local players together, introducing new people to the sport, and inviting players from outside the community to come north and experience disc golf in Dawson.

This year we welcomed 45 players, making it another step forward for an event that continues to grow.

For the first time ever, the Golden Grouse included professional divisions, which was a really exciting milestone for the event. We also hosted the Junior Grouse Championship, featuring a number local and visiting youth and giving the next generation of Dawson disc golfers their own event within the weekend.

There were some exciting changes on the courses too. We officially launched the new Yellow Basket layout at Crocus Bluff, giving players a whole new way to experience our signature course, while we setup a pop-up course at Moose Mountain once again to offer a unique opportunity with showcase views and throws.

Across the weekend we had players of all ages and abilities on the courses. There was some great competition, but just as importantly there were lots of laughs, great shots, bad shots, prizes, food and people enjoying disc golf together.

That’s really what we want the Golden Grouse to be — a celebration of disc golf and an invitation to come experience the sport in Dawson.

Thank you to Youth of Today / Willow Foundation for helping with course setup, and to Wildland Fire Management for their ongoing support of recreation in the community.

Thank you to Moose Mtn. for once again giving us the opportunity to create a pop-up course on the hill. Playing disc golf on Moose Mountain has become one of the most unique parts of the Golden Grouse, and we really appreciate being able to make it happen. Huge thanks to Rod, Brian, Jimmy, and Malcolm for helping to make the event possible.
