Welcome summer student Hollis Mattson!

Zonal is pleased to have some support this summer on social media, and regional naturalist projects. Hollis is a full-time second year student at the University of Alberta studying Biological Sciences.

Hi there! I'm Hollis, I'm currently in my second year in Biology at the university of Alberta. I love being outdoors and particularly enjoy surfing, hiking, and camping. I'm incredibly excited to have the opportunity to help out with the social media posts and updates!

It’s Earth Day! We need a healthy planet to survive. This is a day to get outside, even just for 30 minutes, and appreciate the wonders of the natural world. It’s a day to think about the future we all share on this planet.

The Artemis II crew has shown us some remarkable views of our planet lately, these images are a great reminder of the blue dot that provides us with all we need. 🌎

It's international bat appreciation day! 🦇

Did you know that today is an international day to celebrate bats?
These little flying mammals have recently woken up from their winter hibernation in the northeast region and will be trying to put weight back on after a long winter.

The fungus that causes white-nose syndrome has recently been found in the lower mainland. Zonal works with bats every year and we will be keeping our eyes on the sites we monitor in the region for changes in activity.

Everyone clear your calendars! 🐦‍⬛

We are very excited to watch this presentation by good friend and collaborator/colleague Amie MacDonald. “Tracking birds and bats in northern British Columbia with the Motus Wildlife Tracking System” will walk you through the Motus research network and the expansion in northeastern BC. Zonal has been collaborating with Amie and Birds Canada on this project for the last five years.

Want to take a look into some of the work we do? 🦇🌙

Join wildlife biologist Brian Paterson of Zonal Ecosystems and Wildlife Consultants Ltd. as he shares his knowledge on bats and leads research in conservation deep in Northern BC, this time, in the traditional territory of Tsay Keh Dene.

🎥 This video offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at what a typical night of bat research really involves—from setting up capture nets to navigating the challenges of working with one of BC’s most elusive species.

Whether you’re into conservation, fieldwork, or just love learning about nature, this is a glimpse into science in action you don’t want to miss.

🦇 Watch the full video and discover why protecting BC’s bats is more important than ever.
Filmed by Evan Dux Media. Produced by Chu Cho Environmental Ltd and the community of Tsay Keh Dene. Financial support for part of this project comes from FWCP Peace Region.

The BC Field Ornithologists held their annual AGM and conference in Dawson Creek this last weekend. Despite the rainy weather for some of the time, a large number of species were observed on the field trips including a sighting of a Western Kingbird (only second time ever observed in the Peace)! We also were engaged and entertained by speakers from Birds Canada (Amie MacDonald and Kianna Leung), North Island College (Sandra Milligan) and UNBC (Dr Ken Otter)
