We have had 5 spots open up for the regional training course starting tomorrow

Deer Lake Fire Rescue is proud to host the Ground Cover Firefighting for Structural Firefighters regional training course this summer!

This essential program bridges the gap between traditional structural tactics and the unique demands of fast moving brush and grass fires.

Event Details

Dates: June 13 & 14, 2026

Location: Deer Lake Fire Hall @ 26 Reids Lane

Focus: Specialized tactics for ground cover and Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) incidents.

Why You Need to Be There

As fire seasons become more intense and the lines between urban and wildland areas blur, municipal firefighters are increasingly on the frontlines of complex interface incidents. This course provides the critical preparation needed to protect both yourself and your community.

Key Benefits of Attending:

New Tactics: Move beyond interior firefighting to learn direct and indirect attack methods specifically for ground cover.

Protect Critical Infrastructure: Gain specialized skills for structure triage and protection in high-risk interface zones.

Enhance Safety & Survival: Focus on situational awareness, escape routes, and managing fires with limited water supplies.

Regional Collaboration: Train alongside members from other departments to ensure everyone speaks the same language during major mutual-aid incidents.

Expert Curriculum: The course utilizes the latest IFSTA Ground Cover Fire Fighting, combining standards from the NFPA, & Forestry Service.

Don’t miss this chance to sharpen your skills and build a stronger shield for our region.

πŸ”₯🌲 Wildfire Community Preparedness Day – Deer Lake🌲πŸ”₯

Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is an annual initiative dedicated to raising awareness about wildfire risks and encouraging communities to take proactive steps to reduce their vulnerability to wildfires.

Traditionally observed on the first Saturday in May... and yes, we're a little late 😜... but it's never too late to become better prepared!

Deer Lake Fire Rescue is proud to partner with FireSmart Canada and the Town of Deer Lake to host an evening focused on wildfire preparedness, emergency readiness, and community resilience.

πŸ“… **Wednesday, June 17, 2026**
⏰ **6:00 PM – 8:30 PM**
πŸ“ **Deer Lake Fire Hall – 26 Reid's Lane**

Wildfires don't just impact individual properties, they can affect entire neighbourhoods and communities.

That's why preparedness is a shared responsibility. By working together, we can reduce wildfire risks, strengthen our community's resilience, and better protect our homes, families, and the beautiful landscapes that make Newfoundland such a special place to live.

During the evening, you'll learn how to:

βœ… Understand wildfire risks in our area
βœ… Create an emergency plan for your household
βœ… FireSmart your home and property
βœ… Build an emergency preparedness kit
βœ… Connect with local firefighters and community partners

Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is more than a one-day event, it's a reminder that preparedness is something we should think about year-round.

Every step we take today helps create a safer, stronger, and more resilient community for tomorrow.

Bring the whole family and join us for an evening of learning, fun, and community action!

β˜€οΈπŸ”₯ **Know Before You Burn – Check the Fire Hazard Map Daily** πŸ”₯β˜€οΈ

As we move through the spring and summer months, fire conditions can change quickly depending on temperature, wind, and rainfall.

Before having a backyard fire, burning brush, using ATVs in wooded areas, or spending time outdoors, we encourage everyone to regularly check the Newfoundland & Labrador Fire Hazard Map.

The fire hazard rating helps show how likely fires are to start and spread in different areas of the province. Staying informed is one of the easiest ways we can all help prevent wildfires and protect our communities, forests, cabins, and homes. πŸš’πŸŒ²

You can check the current fire hazard levels here:

https://www.gov.nl.ca/fal/public-education/forestry/forest-fires/fire-hazard-map/

A few important reminders during wildfire season:
β€’ Follow all provincial burn restrictions and advisories
β€’ Never leave campfires unattended
β€’ Fully extinguish fires with plenty of water
β€’ Avoid burning during dry or windy conditions
β€’ Report wildfires immediately by calling 911 or 1-866-709-FIRE (3473)

Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe this wildfire season. πŸŒ²β˜€οΈπŸ”₯

πŸ”₯ **Fire Smart – Protecting Homes, Families & Communities** πŸ”₯

Wildfire risk is increasing across Canada, and being prepared is more important than ever. That’s where FireSmart Canada comes in.

https://firesmartcanada.ca/

FireSmart is a national program focused on helping homeowners and communities reduce the risk of wildfire damage through practical, science-based prevention measures.

One of the biggest dangers during a wildfire is not always the flames themselves. It’s wind-driven embers that can travel long distances and ignite homes and surrounding property.

Simple actions can make a major difference, including:
β€’ Keeping roofs and gutters free of debris
β€’ Cutting grass and removing dead vegetation
β€’ Moving firewood and combustible materials away from your home
β€’ Creating a non-combustible area around structures
β€’ Screening vents and maintaining your property regularly

Residents can complete a FREE Home Ignition Zone Self-Assessment right from their phone or computer using this PDF checklist:

FireSmart Home Self-Assessment PDF:

https://firesmartcanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/HIZ-Self-Assessment-8.5x11-WEB.pdf

You can also download the:

**FireSmart Begins at Home** app on both the Apple Store and Google Play. The app walks homeowners through a self-assessment and provides personalized recommendations to help reduce wildfire risk around your property.

Prepared communities are safer communities. Taking a few proactive steps today can help protect your home, your family, your neighbours, and first responders tomorrow. πŸš’
