Hello...it's been a while. Like six months. Believe it or not, this has been on purpose. I've been thinking about things - a lot.

I'd like to hear from you and I'd really like to know your thoughts.

I've been contemplating for a long time about putting together some education and training based on fire department pump operations for Southeast NB. The program, if I do decide to move forward with it, would be open to anyone interested in participating but would be mostly geared towards new learners and would center around drafting operations, hose and nozzles.

Here's the thing...this would be an uncertified program and not recognized by IFSTA, IFSAC or NBCC; it would be "for your own interest". It would, of course, be based on information from those sources but not an accredited program.

If such a thing existed would you be interested?

What kinds of things do you feel should be part of it, how long should it be and what does the learning look like? What I mean is, how much time do we spend "in the classroom" and how much time do we spend "doing stuff"?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback you may have.

Cheers
Jeff

If you are following along on this page you may be lead to believe not much is happening. Partly true and untrue at the same time. I am still woking on things. I just find myself frequently pulled away from what I am trying to accomplish. If you are interested in knowing what I am currently considering for discussion and context material you can go search out the following articles on Fire Engineering magazine:

"A Quantitative Approach to Selecting Nozzle Flow Rate and Stream (Parts 1 and 2)" written in 2010 and 2011 by Jason N. Vestal and Eric A. Bridge.

If you search out these articles you will find several others attached to them that discuss nozzle types, water droplet size (it actually matters), etc.

I would also encourage you to dig into who Lloyd Layman was and the intended use of the fog stream nozzle. You may also find value in William E. Clark's "Firefighting Principles and Tactics". And well, if you've gone that far, you might as well read a little bit about Charles' Law and Boyle's Law.

Oh, and there's all the UL stuff too. Happy learning!

So, I did say I was working on something, and I am. I’m still months away from something I’ll be comfortable rolling out...

So, I did say I was working on something, and I am. I’m still months away from something I’ll be comfortable rolling out but I am making progress.

If you’re interested to tell me about your preferred learning style I’d love to hear about it.

I’d also love to hear about the best and WORST learning experiences you’ve ever had. I’m not interested in naming names or calling anyone out; only interested in knowing how I can create a wicked learning environment for you.

Stay well brothers and sisters.

Jeff

Good evening friends; I hope you are all well.

The last post I made on this page was in March; about a week or 10 days before the official kickoff of the global pandemic and my, oh my, how the world has changed.

The effects of COVID-19 have hit many people very hard and the impact on our social situations and personal lives has been significant. While I have been very fortunate to not have been adversely affected by the consequences of the virus, I've had to ask myself if it was appropriate to start projects and seek out learner engagement at a time when we just didn't know how things were going to be one day to the next. With so much doubt hanging in the air, I decided to put my ambitions in neutral, assess the landscape and focus the things I felt most important until we had a better grip on the state of our provincial, national and global affairs.

Nine months later I feel it is the time to shift my interests out of neutral and back into drive; even if it's only first gear and even if we're only creeping ahead slowly.

I have begun working on a project that I think might be of use to the fire service of South East NB. It is going to take several months to put together; in fact, I don't anticipate having it ready much before April or May of 2021.

That's a long time, I know but in June of this year I finished a 10 month program in the field of Adult Education at Dalhousie University and I added so much to my understanding of how adults learn that I want to make sure I incorporate as much of what I learned over that period of time into whatever training/education I decide to put out there as "worth showing up for".

I thank you for your patience and will update as I move forward on the project.

Cheers
Jeff

How do you distinguish between a WANT and a NEED?

There’s a difference between these two things.

What kinds of emergency services education or training are of interest to you?
