Team members from the Alberta Ombudsman’s office had the opportunity to speak with municipal leaders from across the province at the 2026 Mountain Refresher Conference, hosted by the Society of Local Government Managers of Alberta.

Our presentations included:
✅Making Administratively Fair Decisions
✅Addressing Complex Behaviours Fairly

We appreciated the engagement and thoughtful dialogue on the challenges municipalities face and the importance of fairness, consistency, and respectful communication in decision-making. Thank you to our hosts for organizing and to the attendees for making these conversations possible!

Thank you to Boyle Street Community Services for welcoming us to the okimaw peyesew kamik / King Thunderbird Centre! Representatives from our office, including the Ombudsman, recently had the opportunity to present to their staff on the role of our office. We also learned about the challenges facing clients of Boyle Street Community Services, which has been supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness and poverty in Edmonton since 1971.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect and learn from incredible organizations making a difference in our community!

Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples, a time to recognize lives lost and the important work of ending violence.
Also known as Red Dress Day, this day of remembrance grew from a grassroots movement sparked by Jaime Black’s REDress Project. Learn more about the project here. https://www.jaimeblackartist.com/exhibitions/

Fairness was at the forefront this past March, through meetings and presentations with organizations representing Albertans as well as government agencies.

The month opened with an overview of our work, emphasizing Administrative Fairness Guidelines, presented to inspectors and staff from the AGLC at their annual meeting.

Representatives from the office, including the Ombudsman, next met with Miskanawah, a Calgary-based charitable organization that supports vulnerable children and youth with programs rooted in Indigenous teachings, ceremonies and guidance from Elders.

We are grateful for the opportunities to meet with these Albertans making a difference in their communities.

Today is the 6th annual Whistleblower Awareness Day! This special day was created to raise awareness about the importance of whistleblowers in establishing and maintaining trust in public institutions. Whistleblower Awareness Day 2026 takes place amid changes in Alberta’s healthcare sector.

“Whistleblowers make the workplace better for everyone, which is why it is essential that organizations protect them. This Whistleblower Awareness Day, I want all Alberta public sector employees, including those employed by the province’s newly restructured healthcare sector, to know that they are protected under the law.”
- Kevin Brezinski, Alberta’s Public Interest Commissioner

For this year’s Whistleblower Awareness Day, the office of the Public Interest Commissioner has published a series of information sheets designed to educate stakeholders about what they can expect in the event of a public interest disclosure investigation. Yesterday, the Public Interest Commissioner was pleased to welcome designated officers from public sector organizations across Alberta for the fifth-annual Public Interest Disclosure Conference.

This year’s virtual sessions focused on equipping attendees with strategies for effectively and efficiently managing complaints under Alberta’s Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act.

Thanks to all the designated officers for participating and making it such a terrific event! Together, we’re building a culture where employees feel safe and supported in disclosing instances of workplace wrongdoing or reprisal.
