We listen to your complaints and investigate decisions made by authorities identified in the Ombudsman Act.

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to recognize and celebrate the traditions, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. We at the Alberta Ombudsman are especially grateful to work, live, and play on Treaty 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10 territories.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of this important occasion, which takes place each year on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Here in Alberta, festivities include art, performances, stew, and bannock at the Bissell Centre in downtown Edmonton, and a special programming lineup featuring cultural teachings and live performances in Calgary’s Heritage Park. Happy !

Kevin Brezinski, Alberta Ombudsman, joined parliamentary ombuds from across Canada this week in Winnipeg for the annual meeting of the Canadian Council of Parliamentary Ombudsman (CCPO).

Yesterday, our team hosted staff from the Police Review Commission (PRC), a newly established agency responsible for investigating complaints against police in Alberta. The PRC shared an engaging presentation about their work, mandate, and complaint-review processes.

We value opportunities to learn from public authorities and deepen our understanding of the systems that help promote fairness.

Team members from the Alberta Ombudsman’s office had the opportunity to speak with municipal leaders from across the province at the 2026 Mountain Refresher Conference, hosted by the Society of Local Government Managers of Alberta.

Our presentations included:

✅Addressing Complex Behaviours Fairly

We appreciated the engagement and thoughtful dialogue on the challenges municipalities face and the importance of fairness, consistency, and respectful communication in decision-making. Thank you to our hosts for organizing and to the attendees for making these conversations possible!

Thank you to Boyle Street Community Services for welcoming us to the okimaw peyesew kamik / King Thunderbird Centre! Representatives from our office, including the Ombudsman, recently had the opportunity to present to their staff on the role of our office. We also learned about the challenges facing clients of Boyle Street Community Services, which has been supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness and poverty in Edmonton since 1971.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect and learn from incredible organizations making a difference in our community!

Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples, a time to recognize lives lost and the important work of ending violence.

Fairness was at the forefront this past March, through meetings and presentations with organizations representing Albertans as well as government agencies.

The month opened with an overview of our work, emphasizing Administrative Fairness Guidelines, presented to inspectors and staff from the AGLC at their annual meeting.

Representatives from the office, including the Ombudsman, next met with Miskanawah, a Calgary-based charitable organization that supports vulnerable children and youth with programs rooted in Indigenous teachings, ceremonies and guidance from Elders.

We are grateful for the opportunities to meet with these Albertans making a difference in their communities.
