Back to school means buses are back on the roads transporting our youth! School starts in a few weeks so start watching for the big beautiful buses on our roads!

What should you do if you approach a bus that is stopped with their 8-way lights flashing red on and the stop sign deployed on an undivided road? Always stop!

Not stopping puts kids at risk. It could also cost you a $567 fine and 6 demerit points.

Back to School - Right Around the Corner!

In a couple weeks, school zones will be back in effect! In Drayton Valley, the speed limit in school zones is 30 KM/H, from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, on school days.

During the first few days kids will be excited and may not be paying attention to the traffic. The following are some driving tips to help keep children safe:

• Examine the road ahead an obey posted speed limits. Always be prepared to slow down or stop.
• Do not drive while distracted.
• Use caution when approaching intersections or crosswalks. Parked or stopped vehicles may hide a pedestrian.
• Watch for school safety patrollers and stop as directed.
• Be very cautious in parking lots or when backing out of a parking stall or driveway.
• Watch for kids between parked vehicles and on the sidewalk. They may dash out into the street after a friend or toy.
• Always stop when approaching a school bus with red lights flashing

"E-Scooters" are considered prohibited miniature vehicles in Alberta and are prohibited from being operated on public roadways and sidewalks.

But I’ve seen other places allow it!
Yes, some municipalities in Alberta have entered into a pilot project with the Province allowing the use of e-scooters on public roadways and sidewalks. However, only commercial e-scooters for hire are permitted, and not personal owned e-scooters. These e-scooters have different restrictions such as maximum speeds and specific locations.

Drayton Valley is not participating in any pilots, subsequently, e-scooters are only permitted to be used on private property.
