🍂 Happy Thanksgiving from Living Spirit United Church! 🍁

Today, we pause to give thanks for the many blessings in our lives, the beauty of creation, the love of family and friends, and the strength of a caring community.

As we gather in gratitude, may we also remember those facing hardship, loneliness, or uncertainty, and find ways to share our blessings with others.

Thanksgiving reminds us that gratitude is more than a feeling; it is an opportunity to put our faith into action through kindness, generosity, and compassion.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the United Church of Canada's historic Apology to Indigenous Peoples, first offered in 1986.

The apology acknowledged the harm caused by colonialism and the church's role in that history. While no apology alone can heal the past, it marked an important step toward building relationships rooted in truth, respect, humility, and reconciliation.

As a congregation, we remain committed to walking this path together, listening to Indigenous voices, learning from one another, and working toward justice and healing for all.

🎬 Community Movie Screening – Doctrine of Discovery: 1493

Join us for a screening of Doctrine of Discovery: 1493, a thought-provoking film exploring the lasting impacts of the Doctrine of Discovery, a 15th-century religious and legal concept that gave European Christian nations the authority to claim lands inhabited by non-Christians.

Although centuries old, this doctrine continues to influence Indigenous rights, relationships, and reconciliation today. This film offers an opportunity to learn more about its history, its ongoing legacy, and why understanding it is an important part of the journey toward truth and reconciliation.

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today we honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, their families, and their communities.

We encourage everyone to wear orange as a visible reminder that Every Child Matters and to continue learning about the lasting impacts of the residential school system.

If you are purchasing an Orange Shirt, please consider buying it from an Indigenous-owned or Indigenous-operated business. Supporting Indigenous creators helps honour the spirit and purpose of this day.

May we continue to listen, learn, and walk the path of truth, healing, and reconciliation together.

We're pleased to share that The United Church of Canada has appointed Rev. Éric Hébert-Daly as the next General Secretary, effective January 1, 2027.

Currently serving as Executive Minister for East Central Ontario, Eastern Ontario Outaouais, and Nakonha:ka Regional Councils, Rev. Hébert-Daly brings extensive experience in church leadership, strategic planning, and community development. A passionate advocate for a thriving and welcoming church, he has played a key role in shaping Toward 2035, our hope-filled strategy for a bolder future.

Born to an Acadian family, Éric has roots in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. He will be the first Francophone to serve as General Secretary.

We give thanks for the faithful leadership of Rev. Michael Blair, who will continue as General Secretary until December 31. Following a transition period in January 2027, he will retire, after more than six years of dedicated service in this critical leadership role.

Please join us in congratulating Rev. Éric Hébert-Daly as he prepares to begin this new ministry of leadership and service.

Cree lawyer, former Member of Parliament, and residential school Survivor Chief Wilton Littlechild has dedicated his life to advancing First Nations rights at the national and international levels. As a Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, he helped investigate the history and legacy of residential schools and contributed to the development of the Commission's Final Report and its 94 Calls to Action. He also played an important role in advancing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples on the international stage.

This Truth and Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge his lifelong commitment that has helped shape conversations on human rights, education, reconciliation, and First Nations self-determination. Thank you for your leadership and dedication to advancing truth, reconciliation and the well-being of First Nations communities.
