Effective May 25, 2026, the Town of Drumheller has issued a Fire Advisory throughout the Drumheller Valley.

The Fire Advisory does not preclude use of fire pits, barbecues, or other recreational fires. However, recreational fire pits must conform to Fire Bylaw 25.24.

Exercise high diligence when utilizing fire for recreational use in conforming fire pits.

Authorities remind residents and visitors that utilization of recreational fireworks must conform to Government of Canada Explosives Regulation and CANNOT be displayed in urbanized areas.

On April 24, Drumheller Fire & Rescue held their annual awards night at the Canalta Cretaceous Conference Centre.

We were joined by Mayor Tony Miglecz and Councillor Maddie Miller on behalf of the Town of Drumheller.

Fire Chief Derian Rosario provided a summary of Department activities throughout 2025. We responded to 317 calls. Approximately 50% of our call volume was due to false alarms, 17% was to Motor Vehicle Collisions, 16% to Medical Calls, and 6 % to Fires. We responded to 9 Structure Fires throughout 2025, and all were classified as ‘Saves’ (fire was successfully brought under control and extinguished). The Chief recognized the great quality of the activities and the commitment of the members this year in the success of the department.

Firefighters were recognized for Years of Service awards for each 5 year increment of service to the Department. These included:

5 Years - Tony Miglecz, Savanna Richardson
10 Years - Keith Hodgson, Kyle Smith, Doug Stanger, Randy Fournier, Jonathan Molzahn
15 Years - Matt Bolin
20 Years - Jordan Harper, Craig Comstock, Travis Hardy, James Martin, Lee Borsheim, Reg Gallagher, Steve Wade, Keith Poole
30 Years - Jeff Gerlinger
40 Years - Duane Bolin
50 Years - Don Gerlinger, Joe Gerlinger, Peter Gruber

The Mayor’s Award for best attendance to Fire Calls and Practices was presented to Darren Jones.

The Rollie Yavis Firefighter of the Year Award for service above and beyond was presented to Randy Fournier.

Chief Rosario presented Jeff Gerlinger with a Gold Challenge Coin in recognition of his outstanding contributions throughout the year.

A great meal was provided by Mike from Pizza 249. Thanks to Canalta Hotels for providing the awesome venue.

⚠️ Ice Safety Reminder – Warmer Temps

Spring thaw makes river ice in Alberta extremely unstable and dangerous, requiring a "stay off" approach, especially near moving water, bridges, and culverts. Warmer temperatures, runoff, and fluctuating water levels degrade ice from below, creating hidden weak spots.

Safe ice is typically 10+ cm for walking, but this is unreliable during spring.

Key Spring Ice Safety Guidelines for Alberta:
• Avoid Rivers: River ice is notoriously dangerous in spring due to fast currents, which weaken the ice, particularly around bends.
• Signs of Weak Ice: Watch for dark, slushy, or "honeycombed" (rotten) ice.
• Safety Equipment: Always carry ice picks and a rope.
• Pets and Children: Keep pets on a leash and closely monitor children near ice-covered water.
• "If in Doubt, Don't Go Out": Do not rely solely on ice thickness, as it can vary drastically in a few feet.

If someone falls through, do not go in after them; call 911 immediately.

Last nights practice involved us honing our skills and introducing our new members to what’s involved with vehicle extraction. The precise movements moving an egg from cone to cone with a tool that can potentially put 38,000 lbs of force on an object and a weight of 53 lbs. wasn’t an easy task. Everyone, even our new members, did an exceptionally great job with only a few minor casualties.

Good day to everyone. Well it’s just about that time of year again to mess us up with the time change, next Sunday, March 8th. Here’s a little reminder that our little friends attached to our ceilings, require some monthly testing and especially a fresh battery twice a year if needed.

Here is some great advice to consider to help prevent cooking fires.

Cooking fires and burns can happen in seconds. Stay in the kitchen when you’re cooking, keep an eye on open flames, and always have a lid nearby to smother small grease fires safely.

Simple steps like staying focused, keeping flammable items away from the stove, and knowing how to respond if a fire starts can help reduce burn risks in the kitchen.

🚨 Drumheller Fire & Rescue Safety Reminder

Homeowners — have you checked the Expiry Date on your smoke and CO detectors lately?

These life-saving devices expire after 10 years — and an expired unit may not alert you in an emergency.

✅ Do this today:

1. Remove your smoke or carbon monoxide detector from the wall or ceiling
2. Look on the back for the expiry or manufacture date
3. If it’s older than 10 years, replace it immediately

🛑 Don’t wait until it’s too late.
Working detectors save lives — expired ones don’t.
