Child and Youth in Care Week, particularly recognized in British Columbia, is dedicated to shifting negative perceptions and raising social awareness about the experiences of children and youth in care.
First proclaimed by the province of British Columbia in 2011, this week is a time for people in communities everywhere to elevate youth voice and talent, and support and celebrate our province’s incredible young people in government care.
We raise our hands to the amazing children and youth in care in our schools, and to the hard-working staff at our three local protective agencies: Kw’umut Lelum, Tsi’elh Stuhw Tu Smun’eem, and the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

National Indigenous Peoples Month, observed every June, is a time for Canadians to learn about and celebrate the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. The month encourages reflection on reconciliation, respect for Indigenous heritage, and recognition of the resilience and ongoing contributions of Indigenous communities.

June is Pride Month! This is a time when 2SLGBTQI+ communities and allies come together to spotlight the resilience, celebrate the talent, and recognize the contributions of 2SLGBTQI+ communities. Pride celebrations happen throughout the month in our schools and in our community. June 21st is the date of the annual Duncan Pride Parade. It will begin at 11:00AM at Vancouver Island University. Staff, students, and parents from across the Cowichan Valley School District will be there to participate and support!

National AccessAbility Week 2026
This week is National AccessAbility Week. This year's theme is "Building a Strong, Accessible Canada."
It invites all of us, including governments, businesses, organizations, and individuals, to take action to advance a barrier-free country. Significant progress has been made to eliminate and prevent barriers, and by continuing to work together, we can build a truly accessible, inclusive and equitable Canada.
Our country is stronger when persons with disabilities can participate fully in all aspects of society.
Together, we can empower each other and make a meaningful impact.
In our district we are committed to this work and are in the process of surveying students, staff and families to identify barriers to accessible learning and are continuing our work to revise our accessibility plan for 2027-2030. We look forward to releasing the plan early this Fall

On Friday, May 22, 2026, 100 Indigenous students grades 7-10 from across the Cowichan Valley School District, gathered for the third annual Nations Rising: District Indigenous Student Leadership Conference. Each year the conference has continued to grow and this year we invited Alberni District Secondary School and Gulf Islands Secondary to join us as well!

This conference is planned each year by the Nations Rising District Indigenous Student Leadership group that consists of 28 Indigenous students from across the district.

This year we were joined by Shayla Stonechild as our keynote who shared her inspiring story. Students attended various workshops such as carving, 3d printing, cedar weaving, boxing, vision boards, and spray painting.

It was a wonderful day of learning, fun, and connection!
