Happy Father’s Day to all the dedicated dads in nature and beyond!

This Pileated Woodpecker father is hard at work feeding his hungry chicks. How can you tell this is dad? Both male and female Pileated Woodpeckers sport a striking red crest, but males have a red stripe on the cheek (the "moustache") while females have a black one.

These impressive birds excavate large nesting cavities in dead or dying trees, creating homes that are later used by many other species—from ducks and owls, to squirrels and bats.

Today, we’re celebrating the fathers who help nurture the next generation.

Black bears are out and about in the park!

Black bears are a natural part of Ontario's wilderness, and a safe park experience starts with proper food storage. Keep all food, coolers, garbage, and scented items secured when not in use, and never feed wildlife.

Visiting with your dog? Keep them on a leash.
Unleashed dogs can provoke wildlife and may lead bears back to you, increasing the risk of a dangerous encounter.

Help us protect Ontario's bears by respecting their space and keeping your campsite clean.

🍓Store food properly
🗑️ Dispose of waste in designated bins
🚫 Never feed wildlife
🐕 Keep dogs leashed and under control
🥾 Give bears plenty of room if you encounter one

Check out the Bear wise webpage for more information.

Together, we can keep Ontario's parks wild, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. Contact the Red Lake park office if you have questions or concerns. 807-727-1329
