Have you ever found a lobster trap teenager? This one was hiding in a rock berm and didn't want to come out.

Jokes aside - Canada is actually one of the leaders when it comes to marking and tracking our fishing gear. We have been using ID tags for a very long time, we have specific rope colors to identify what fishing area you are in and we have the Fishing Gear Reporting System which is required to be utilized when gear is lost.

These tags help us show how long the gear has been sitting on the shorelines and how long it's going to prevail in the environment if it's not cleaned up.

Have you ever found a really old lobster trap washed ashore?

Oops! We made a mistake! We didn't remove 12,000 pounds of debris this weekend, we ACTUALLY removed over 13,300 pounds!

What an incredible achievement by all who came out to help! Our annual Baccaro Clean Up takes a community and we have many thanks to give out!

🌊 A huge thank you to all the staff and volunteers who came to help throughout the weekend. We had lots of helping hands!
🌊 Thank you to the fishers and harvesters who were there with ATVs, side-by-sides, trucks, trailers, hauling and last minute calls for help
🌊 Thanks to the local seafood companies that lent us their lobster trap trailers
🌊 Another thanks to the Municipality of Barrington for helping pick up the recyclable tires and waived our tipping fees
🌊 A BIG thank you to for the funding, which helped us divert over 85% of what we removed!
🌊 Many thanks to the many landowners that let us access the shoreline from their property
🌊 And especially thank you to **ams for streaming us live so the WHOLE WORLD could watch!

Over the years, we have helped remove more than 1,400 abandoned, lost, or discarded (ALD) lobster traps and other man-made debris from Baccaro Point, totaling 83,000 pounds of waste!! WOW! 👏

Join us for our next clean up in Meteghan this weekend!

Throughout this journey cleaning the shorelines of I have met so many incredible people. I love to highlight our different stories, but today, I get to highlight a ❤️ whole family ❤️

Llyod, Marianne and Gillian have quickly become a big part of our team in SouthWest Nova Scotia. They are a dedicated and passionate family who really do care about our fisheries and the ocean.

👩 Marianne has been helping at many events, has become a Team Leader, she surveys and even is lending us her incredible quilting skills to repurpose materials we find on the shorelines. She is a woman of many skills.

👨 Llyod is one of the most handy men I have come to know. He is always there, with tools in hand, ready to divert anything that can be saved.from the landfill. He is skilled at ATVing and has been an integral part of more material being diverted from SW NovaScotia.

🌊 Gillian is the daughter of these two amazing folks, but is forging her own path. She is a Fisheries officer and has been to many of our events - in AND out - of uniform. She is actually the first Fisheries Officers to join us on the shores and you can tell she is passionate about protecting the ocean. Gillian also makes rope baskets from reclaimed fishing rope! ❤️

I could go on. There's more, but I am sure they are going to tell me to never make a post like this again because they aren't doing this for glory - They are doing it because they are good people.

And that's the kind of humans I get to spend my days with. Good, passionate and dedicated humans who are out there trying to make a positive difference on the world around them. 💙

After the clean up this weekend we went to visit one of Nova Scotia's most beautiful shorelines, complete with white sand and rolling waves - Stoney Island Beach. We played in the sand, went for a romantic beach walk, and picked up some lobster bands ❤️ 🦞

What a great way to spend an evening ☀️ 🌊 Don't worry! We made sure to stay on the wet sand to protect the endangered piping plover 🐦

That's a wrap on our Baccaro Point Shoreline Clean Up. 294 ALD traps, plus over 2500 pounds of other debris was removed from the shores of Baccaro.

After the traps are taken to the recycling pile we will have a final weight, but our Data Leads guess is over twelve thousand pounds! I will have more on the clean up soon, but but the most important thing to do is to thank every single one of you who supported us during this clean up.

Even tonight, on my way home, I called another local fisher to help haul thr lobster traps. I really thought that two lobster pot trailers would be enough but we had so much help, we filled THREE!

It's our turn to head down to Southwest Nova Scotia because tomorrow we are attending the , and then after that!!! We're headed to the Baccaro Point Shoreline cleanup!

I told the boys we were going to stop on our way at the Sissiboo River Highway bridge and pick up one bag of debris. That bag just happened to be a supersack! MWAHAHHA!

Heads Up! You might see some cameras around this weekend filming a show for TV. More to come on this soon! See you this weekend!
