We have a very unique species to share this !
Recently our Wildlife Helpline received an unusual call about a North American Horned River Otter spotted resting along the north Saskatchewan river.
The caller reported that the animal appeared lethargic and was allowing people to approach, highly abnormal behavior for a typically elusive species. Our team responded and, upon arrival, located the individual curled up along the riverbank. Due to its subdued state, rescue was safely and easily achieved. After transport to our wildlife hospital, the patient underwent a full physical exam, radiographs (x-rays) and bloodwork. Aside from mild dehydration and a few superficial abrasions, no significant injuries were found. We suspect that the animal may have experienced temporary disorientation, possibly due to a minor head injury or environmental stressor.
This rare species, sometimes referred to as the Alberta Horned Otter, is not commonly encountered, as they tend to inhabit remote waterways and are highly secretive. Males develop small keratinized horn structures during maturity, which are shed seasonally, while females lack these features entirely. Often heard vocalizing under full moons, these creatures have been the source of many mythology's and folk tales.
Our patient has already shown improvement with supportive care and is expected to be released back into the area where he was found within the coming days. We feel incredibly fortunate to assist such a unique species, and we’ll continue to monitor for any additional reports in the area!
