How do our foster care programs support the children and youth in care?

The focus is on providing them with supportive homes with regular contact with their family, culture, and community. We also emphasize access and exposure to cultural practices within the home.

Youth can be connected with a youth coach dedicated to their holistic health and well-being.

That’s why we provide our free, single-session counselling in-person, over the phone, and online. You access therapy however you like.

We are proud to highlight a transformative new partnership dedicated to fostering a safer, more connected community for young people in Mill Woods.

Funded by the City of Edmonton, The Mill Woods Collaborative for Children, Youth and Families brings together the expertise of three leading Edmonton agencies:
- The Family Centre
- BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area
- Family Futures Resource Network

The Collaborative aims to improve social-emotional learning, increase community engagement, and reduce the likelihood that youth aged 13 to 18 will become involved in crime.

As a new parent, you might feel like you have to ‘get it all right.’

Whether it’s bonding, feeding, schedules, or bedtime, the pressure to do it ‘properly’ may overwhelm you to the point where nothing ever feels ‘good enough.’

The Postpartum Therapy Group is a free, non-judgmental space to talk about how you are feeling and learn practical tips to feel better. You don’t need a diagnosis to join, and you don’t need to be at your breaking point. If something just feels off, this group is for you.

The next group start dates are:
- June 10 at Castle Downs YMCA
- June 11 online

During , and every month, our team at The Family Centre is committed to working towards reconciliation by becoming a wicihtasow (ally).

This includes addressing the impacts of historical trauma, deepening our knowledge and understanding of Indigenous history, and providing opportunities to experience ceremony, traditional teachings, and activities.

Sharing your feelings in a positive way makes it easier for your partner to understand your experience. You are not attacking; instead, you are creating an opportunity for a more respectful conversation.

Focus on how you feel and what’s going on for you, rather than accusing your partner. A helpful technique is to use “I” statements. Try “I feel anxious when plans change suddenly” instead of “You make me anxious when you change plans.”
