The Penhold Multiplex recently demonstrated their recognition of wheelchair rugby as sport, just like any other sport played by people who are not in wheelchairs, by permanently painting lines required to play wheelchair rugby on their gym floor. The Town of Penhold is truly a leader in breaking barriers and should be a role model for all communities. Here is our letter of appreciation to the Town of Penhold and inparticular, the staff at the Penhold Multiplex.

Wheelchair Sports Alberta is looking for volunteers to help with the Capital City Showdown, an annual wheelchair rugby tournament hosted by the Steel Wheels Quad Rugby Club in Edmonton, Alberta.

Date: Sept 19th starting at 5:30 to Sept 21, 2026
Location: St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre (StFX) is 9240 163 Street

The tournament brings wheelchair rugby athletes together for a weekend of competitive play, and we need volunteers to help keep the games running smoothly!

Volunteer Positions

We are looking for volunteers to help at the score table, including:

Scorekeeper – records the score, player information, penalties, timeouts, and other game information.
Game Clock Operator – operates the official game clock and keeps track of game time.
Shot Clock Operator – operates the shot clock and assists with penalty timing.
Penalty Area Volunteer – helps manage the penalty area and supports officials with penalty timing.

There will be 12 games throughout the tournament, so we need a great team of volunteers to help make the event a success.

No wheelchair rugby experience is required! Training and support will be provided before your shift, and experienced volunteers will be available to answer questions.

Your time helps provide athletes with the opportunity to compete, develop their skills, and be part of the wheelchair rugby community.

A HUGE THANK YOU to all of our amazing volunteers who came out to support Wheelchair Sports Alberta at our Casino fundraiser this past weekend!

We know the hours can be long, especially with some very late-night and early-morning shifts, and we truly appreciate everyone who gave their time, energy, and support to make the event a success.

Our Casino is one of WSA’s most important fundraisers. The funds raised help support wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby programs, athlete travel to tournaments and National Championships, sport wheelchairs and adaptive equipment, and athlete development opportunities across Alberta.

Because of your support, our athletes have more opportunities to train, compete, travel, and represent Alberta.
