๐๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ ๐ฅ๐ฉ๐ง ๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ต - ๐ข๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ถ๐ ๐ก๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ด๐ถ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฉ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ถ๐๐ (๐ฅ๐ฉ๐ง) ๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ต, and this week we are proud to celebrate our pawsome RVT team who put their heart and soul into the work they do to care for animals each and every day.
This year's RVT Month theme is Then, Now and Next.
๐ง๐๐๐ก: Did you know, the City of Edmonton hired its first RVTs 25 years ago and their hard work and dedication helped shape the pawsome work that the Animal Care & Control Centreโs medical team does now. Over the years, the field has evolved into a highly skilled, regulated medical profession that serves as a cornerstone of animal welfare and shelter medicine.
๐ก๐ข๐ช: Today, our medical team has grown to include 7 RVTs, 2 Veterinarians, and 1 VMA. Our tenacious RVTs are the true lifeblood of our facility as the demands each day can vary immensely - From performing intake exams, scanning microchips, and administering vaccines to maintaining precise medical files, running diagnostics, and assisting veterinarians with emergency surgeries, spay/neuter procedures, dental work, and amputationsโthey handle it all. Their ability to adapt on the fly ensures every animal receives compassionate, high-quality medical care.
And donโt forget about mentorship and building community capacity. Our team does that too! We routinely host practicums and rotations for students from NAIT and the University of Calgary; volunteer for animal welfare boards, and engage with and educate the public on animal welfare at a variety of events throughout the year!
๐ก๐๐ซ๐ง: As we look to the future, our RVTs continue to push the boundaries of shelter medicine and bring focus to the needs of people and their pets to receive the highest quality of care and support. By embracing modern diagnostic tools, advancing clinical protocols, and championing innovative care standards, they ensure that the animals that find their way into our shelter receive the highest quality of care for tomorrow and beyond.
Thank you to our amazing RVT team for your resilience, hard work, and endless heart! Oh, and those two RVTs we hired 25 years ago? Theyโre still here working hard every day taking care of Edmontonโs lost and stray animals!
