Are you a current post-secondary student in Alberta? Or, did you graduate from one in 2016 or later?

Join the Government of Alberta's Post-Secondary Student Focus Group, and make your voice heard on:
(1) campus learning environments, (2) freedom of expression and academic discourse, (3) institutional neutrality, and (4) student conduct processes.

Digital consent is campus consent. In a world where so much of student life happens online, digital boundaries are just as real and important as physical ones.

To wrap up , we are focusing on digital consent and online safety. From group chats and social media to virtual classrooms, respecting digital limits directly protects post-secondary student wellbeing. Online harassment, non-consensual sharing of intimate images, and digital coercion severely impact student mental health and academic focus.

Practicing digital consent means asking before tagging someone in a post, checking in before sharing photos or private messages, and respecting when someone sets limits on their online availability.

At ASEC, our stance is simple: no form of sexual or gender based violence is acceptable, ever, whether it occurs in person or online.

Consent is not just something we talk about in intimate situations. It is a habit we practice every single day in our friendships, study groups, roommate dynamics, and campus spaces.

For , we are highlighting everyday consent and what it looks like to build truly respectful relationships. Asking before posting a friend's photo online, checking in before giving a hug, or making sure someone actually has the emotional bandwidth to listen to a vent are all small ways we practice consent daily.

When everyday consent becomes the norm on campus, it directly improves student wellbeing. It creates low pressure environments where people feel safe to express their needs, set limits, and trust the people around them. Healthy, respectful campus relationships build a stronger, safer post-secondary community for everyone.

Boundaries are not just about saying no in intimate moments. On campus, they show up every single day in our group chats, study groups, dorm rooms, and night out plans.

For , we are taking a closer look at how setting and respecting personal limits directly impacts post-secondary student wellbeing.

When personal boundaries are ignored, the effect goes far beyond a single awkward moment. Boundary violations directly affect student mental health, academic focus, and overall peace of mind.

Accepting a boundary without guilt-tripping, pressure, or pushback creates a healthier, safer campus community for everyone.

At ASEC, our position on student safety is clear:
- Zero Acceptance: No form of sexual or gender based violence is acceptable, ever.
- Student Voice: Post-secondary students must be actively included in shaping campus safety strategies.
- Survivor Centered Policy: Institutions must enforce strong, survivor focused policies across all Alberta campuses

Respecting personal limits across every part of student life is essential to building a true culture of consent on our campuses.

Today is . A reminder that how we respond when someone discloses an experience of sexual or gender-based violence can make all the difference.

When a peer or friend confides in you, you don't need to have all the answers. Use the B-R-A-V-E model to guide a supportive, trauma-informed conversation:

B – Believe Them: Offer unconditional support without judgment, interrogation, or placing blame.

R – Respect Their Decisions: Honour their privacy and autonomy. Let them decide what steps they want to take next.

A – Acknowledge Their Courage: Express gratitude for their trust (e.g., "Thank you for sharing this with me").

V – Validate Their Feelings: Reassure them that whatever they are feeling is completely normal and valid.

E – Explore Options & Resources: Offer to help them find campus or community resources, but let them remain in control of the process.

Believing survivors is a fundamental step in stopping SGVB on and off campuses across Alberta.

At ASEC, we advocate for the continued implementation of robust, survivor-focused campus policies that mandate trauma-informed response training for staff and faculty, ensure confidentiality, and guarantee accessible support services across all Alberta post-secondary institutions.

This week marks Consent Awareness Week across post-secondary campuses!

All week long, ASEC is sharing resources, sparking conversations, and highlighting how we can collectively build safer, more supportive campus communities across Alberta.

To kick off the week, we’re starting with the foundation: what does consent actually look like? Consent isn't a one-time checkbox or an assumption; it is an ongoing practice of mutual respect, active communication, and bodily autonomy.

Freely Given: Offered without pressure, coercion, or power dynamics.

Informed: Everyone involved has full clarity on what is happening.

Continuous: Required at every step and can be withdrawn at any time.

Enthusiastic: Grounded in active, mutual desire.

At the Alberta Students' Executive Council (ASEC), our stance is clear: no form of sexual or gender-based violence (SGBV) is acceptable, ever. We are committed to fostering post-secondary environments where consent is the standard in every space, both on and off campus.

The Government of Alberta is investing over $148 million over three years to create more than 8,000 new post-secondary spaces in high-demand fields, helping domestic students train for rewarding careers close to home.

Key Expansion Highlights:

- System-Wide Growth: The Government of Alberta is adding nearly 8,000 seats by 2028-2029, bringing the total Targeted Enrolment Expansion (TEE) investment to over $460 million and 15,000+ new spaces in total across three rounds.

- Healthcare: Close to 1,000 new nursing seats and more than 150 spaces in paramedicine programs.

-Education: Over $25 million committed to create nearly 1,000 seats across Bachelor of Education, after-degree, and expedited teaching certificate pathways.

- Engineering & Tech: 750+ new engineering seats alongside expanded capacity in technology, early learning, and skilled trades.

This funding directly responds to institutional proposals from schools across the province, including the University of Alberta and NAIT, and allows institutions to be responsive in real time to local demand.

We are excited to officially introduce Deogyne Ngesa from the Students' Association of NorQuest College (SANQC), who was selected during our Open Democracy Lottery draw on September 9, 2026!

Deogyne joins a dedicated team of student leaders driving provincial advocacy forward to build an accessible, affordable, and well-supported post-secondary system for Alberta students. We are thrilled to have her leadership on the team this year.
