Across the province, students' associations are running food pantries and food security programs built for their own campus communities.

Some let students discreetly order a box of food products and other essentials: no lineups, no explaining yourself, just support when you need it. Others are stocked and maintained right on campus, giving students an easy, judgment-free place to turn to.

These are just a few of the pantries keeping Alberta students fed.

It's Alberta Local Food Week, a time to celebrate the incredible agricultural bounty grown, harvested, and produced right here in our province.

But as we celebrate that abundance, it's worth asking who actually gets to share in it. For post-secondary students juggling tuition, rent, and part-time jobs, access to that local, affordable food is often the first thing to slip.

All week, we're highlighting food insecurity on Alberta's campuses, and the incredible work students' associations across the province are doing to fight it.

After the launch of the expert panel on AI in post-secondary in May, Alberta's government made a string of AI announcements in July, and several of them touch on funding for post-secondary and how it runs in the province.

The province is investing $50 million over five years into Amii, Alberta's AI research institute, split across five ministries. $15 million of that is coming through Advanced Education, and officials have tied the funding directly to students: Premier Danielle Smith framed it as a way to improve public services and create high-value jobs, while Minister of Advanced Education Myles McDougall said it's meant to help students graduate with the AI skills the workforce now expects.

This is part of a bigger AI push across government. Alberta has also been using AI tools to review decades-old government code, and just signed a five-year AI partnership agreement with Quebec to share strategies and tools.

For post-secondary specifically, that means new public funding flowing through Advanced Education tied to AI, and government messaging that increasingly links AI skills to what students are expected to graduate with.
