A big thank you to our partner, , for inviting AMP to be part of The Advice Constellation.

It was an inspiring evening of connection, conversation, and shared learning, bringing youth, mentors, and community leaders together to explore the impact of mentorship.

We’re grateful to ECHOFORM for creating space for meaningful connections and the reminder that mentorship is a two-way exchange. Everyone has something to share and learn!

After sharing her thoughts on the importance of mentor training, we asked Cassandra Rijavec, Volunteer Resource and Mentoring Supervisor, what mentors can expect to learn from the training.

Mentors will learn practical skills and strategies to start their mentoring relationship that apply to a variety of settings. Combined with safety essentials and real-life examples, it will add new skills to a mentor’s toolkit.

📚 A little flexibility can help keep Reading Buddies going strong.

We know things happen — students get sick, move in or out of schools, or may be away for other reasons. Student triads can help manage attendance changes and keep everyone connected.

Keeping the same student pairs throughout the school year gives buddies time to build trust, connection, and meaningful relationships.

Consistency strengthens the benefits of Reading Buddies, from social skills and academic motivation to empathy and a stronger sense of responsibility. 💙

📚 Reading Buddies is a simple way to bring mentoring into schools by pairing older and younger students to read and learn together.

Get started by pairing classes with at least a two-year grade difference, finding another teacher at your school to partner with. This can be done school-wide or between individual classes, creating opportunities for older students to support younger students while building connections and community. 🤝

🌿 Indigenous Mentoring in Schools

What happens when young people have opportunities to connect with community, culture, and learning?

This Indigenous mentorship program connects high school Indigenous students with community members through for-credit land camps. Students engage in cultural teachings and Two-Eyed Seeing STEM activities while building relationships with Elders, Kokums, Aunties, Uncles, Mushums, community members, and post-secondary institutions.

🎒 Transition Mentoring in Schools

Starting at a new school can feel overwhelming—but having a friendly face can make a difference!

In this transition mentoring program, Grade 10–11 students become mentors for new Grade 8/9 students. They welcome and orient new students at events in the spring and fall, while continuing to be a source of support and connection throughout the school year.

🌟 High School Teen Mentoring

What if high school students could become mentors and make a difference in a younger student's life?

In this program, high school students complete mentorship training before meeting weekly with a teacher to choose themes and plan activities for their elementary mentees. Mentors went to a nearby elementary school to spend time with their mentees and build relationships!
