Twelve Métis high school students from the Otipemisiwak Métis Student Association (OMSA) recently travelled to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to attend the 2026 Indspire Soaring Youth Empowerment Conference—one of Canada’s largest gatherings dedicated to inspiring and empowering Indigenous youth.
Throughout the conference, students participated in workshops, explored post-secondary education and career pathways, and connected with Indigenous youth from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities across Turtle Island. The experience provided valuable opportunities for personal growth, leadership development, and future planning as students learned from Indigenous professionals, educators, and role models from across the country.
A highlight of the trip was the opportunity to share a dinner with Otipemisiwak Métis Government President Andrea Sandmaier, Secretary of Education, Training, and Veterans Affairs Lisa Wolfe, Youth Representative Rebecca Lavalee, and Secretary of Women, Gender Equity, and Inclusivity Gabrielle Blatz. Students engaged in meaningful conversations about leadership, education, and the importance of investing in the next generation of Métis Citizens.
Beyond the conference itself, the trip allowed students to experience a new part of Canada, strengthen their connections to community, and gain confidence through cultural learning and new experiences. The memories, friendships, and inspiration gained in Halifax will continue to support these young leaders as they pursue their educational and career goals.
Rupertsland Institute and Student Association are proud to support opportunities that empower Métis youth to dream big, explore their potential, and see themselves reflected in the leaders, professionals, and changemakers shaping the future of our Nation.
