Sage Seniors Association

Sage Seniors Association In it's 56th year, Sage continues to be a trusted resource for seniors living in community.

Sage is a senior-serving not-for-profit organization that collaborates with partners who have one goal in mind: helping seniors to live their best lives possible. At Sage, seniors do as much as they can, as well as they can, for as long as they can. Our innovative social services and life-enrichment programs are bound by a common mission: that all Edmonton seniors live the fullest, healthiest, mos

t adventurous lives possible. Our community has a unique opportunity to view seniors as community assets; to not only offer help when they need it, but to ultimately encourage them to contribute and fulfill their potential. Seniors helped to build our province, and at Sage, they’re still building.

AEAAC is pleased to present Virtual Lunch & Learn: Elder Abuse Through a Colonial Lens in the spirit of Truth & Reconciliation Month 🟠🪶

🗓️ Thursday, September 10, 2026
🕛 12:00-1:00 pm
💻 Virtual, open to the public

Elder abuse cannot be understood without acknowledging the lasting impacts of colonization on Indigenous families and communities. Join us as we explore how residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, systemic racism, and the disruption of traditional family and community structures have contributed to the conditions that place many Elders at risk today.

We'll cover
☑️The historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous Elders
☑️ Different forms of elder abuse, including financial, emotional, physical, neglect, and systemic abuse
☑️ Protective factors rooted in Indigenous culture, community, and kinship
☑️ Practical strategies for individuals, families, organizations, and communities to support, protect, and honour Elders
☑️ Moving from awareness to action by strengthening intergenerational relationships and restoring respect for Elders

Leave with a deeper understanding of elder abuse in its historical context, and practical ways to build safer, more culturally responsive communities.

Facilitated by Shauna Livesey, MSW, RSW, a Cree and Beaver (nehiyaw/tsááʔne) social worker, educator, therapist, and PhD student at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her work focuses on Indigenous health and wellness, trauma, relational healing, and decolonizing social work practice.

Do you work, volunteer, or live alongside older adults?

You can help connect seniors with the information and resources they need to live well.

Sage's Directory of Senior Services is a free, trusted resource that helps seniors, caregivers, families, and professionals navigate the often complex and changing landscape of services and supports. Inside are hundreds of detailed listings for housing, health services, government programs, transportation, recreation, financial assistance, caregiving resources, and much more.

Whether you work in healthcare, a community organization, or supportive housing, volunteer with older adults, care for an aging family member, or live in a building or neighbourhood with seniors, having Sage Directories readily available means trusted information is always close at hand.

Boxes of Directories are available free of charge and can be picked up at Sage Seniors Association (15 Sir Winston Churchill Square), Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

You never know when someone will need information—or how much a simple connection to the right resource can make a difference.

Together, we can help ensure every senior has access to the supports they need, when they need them.
