The man of the hour!

Tonight we got to officially celebrate the retirement of Deputy Chief Stefan Farkas after 41 years in the fire service!

DC Farkas started his fire career in Athabasca before moving to Edson where he was on the Edson department for 32 years filling various roles, eventually moving up to volunteer Deputy Chief.

Farkas spent many years on the front lines, responding to calls, being a leader on the fire ground, leading the Honour Guard, and teaching our next generation of members.

Thank you for your dedication to the fire service and to our community!

Fire Safety Friday – Spring Babysitting Safety 🌱👶
As spring rolls in and families get back into sports, outdoor activities and later evenings, many households start relying on babysitters a little more. Before you head out, make sure your babysitter has the fire‑safety basics covered.

A quick walkthrough goes a long way. Make sure your babysitter knows:
✔ Your home escape plan and where to meet outside
✔ The outdoor meeting place and how to get there
✔ How to reach 911 and your emergency contacts
✔ How to unlock doors and windows
✔ Where smoke alarms are located and what they sound like

If your babysitter will be cooking, remind them to:
✔ Keep kids and combustibles at least 3 ft away from the stove
✔ Never leave the room while cooking
✔ Turn pot handles inward
✔ Keep towels, paper products and plastics clear of heat sources
✔ Keep counters and stovetops free of clutter

Other helpful reminders:
✔ Keep a phone number where you can be reached in an easy‑to‑find spot
✔ Make sure the babysitter knows your home address
✔ Store matches, lighters and candles out of reach
✔ Review any “kid‑free zones” around appliances or outdoor grills

Spring can get busy fast. A few minutes spent sharing safety information helps make sure the little ones stay safe while you're away.

🔥Fire Safety Friday: In the Hot Seat with Cody Weston🔥

Cody has been part of the Edson Fire Department for 13 years, bringing with him a deep sense of community responsibility shaped by his upbringing in Robb. In a small town where outside help wasn’t always an option, neighbours depended on each other, and the fire department played a major role in that shared sense of care and accountability. That environment inspired Cody to get involved and give back in a meaningful way.
One of the biggest lessons Cody has learned over the years is that the first casualty in almost any emergency, critical or otherwise, is the plan. Situations change quickly, and adaptability, teamwork and clear thinking are just as important as preparation.

What Cody enjoys most about being part of the brigade is working toward a common goal and seeing the impact that work can have on families during some of their most difficult moments. Knowing that the crew can make a real difference is what keeps him committed after more than a decade of service.

🔥 Cody’s Fire Safety Tip:
Know your outs. Modern homes contain more synthetic materials than ever before, which means fires burn hotter and faster than they used to. Survival time has dropped significantly. Make sure everyone in your household knows at least two ways out of every room and practise your escape plan regularly.

This week we had a presentation on search and rescue techniques from Chief Cherpin and got the chance to practice some rescue drags.

We also got to celebrate firefighter Julia Darling’s birthday with some cake!
