Over 60 Cats Seized from Edson Home

On April 29, 2026, Town of Edson Enforcement Services Peace Officers executed a search warrant under the Animal Protection Act at a residential property in the Glenwood neighbourhood.

As a result of the search, 63 cats were seized. This brings the total number of cats removed from this property to 121 over the past year, with 58 previously surrendered.

Enforcement Services would like to thank all agencies that assisted in executing the warrant, including our Peace Officers, Animal Rescue Agencies in Edson and Hinton, Edson RCMP, and the Edson Fire Department.

Every cat that was found has been taken into care.

The investigation continues and charges are anticipated

The Town of Edson is extending the 30 km/h speed zone between 46th Street and 47th Street on 3rd Avenue to allow for continued monitoring and evaluation before a decision is made on whether the speed reduction will become permanent.

The reduced speed area has been in place as part of an internal pilot focused on improving safety, encouraging safer driving behaviour, and reducing the severity of potential collisions. Early observations have been positive, and extending the pilot period will allow the Town to gather additional data and better understand longer‑term impacts.

The 30 km/h speed limit will remain in effect while monitoring continues. Speed data, driver compliance, and impacts to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists will all be reviewed. Portable speed indicator signage and enforcement will remain in place during this period.

Further updates will be shared once the evaluation is complete. Residents with questions or feedback are encouraged to contact Enforcement Services at 4835–6 Avenue, by phone at 825‑605‑5432, or by email at [email protected].

The Government of Alberta is increasing several traffic fines across the province starting March 13, 2026. Many common offences will see fines increase by 30%, while high‑risk and dangerous driving offences will rise by 50%. These changes apply to all tickets issued by law enforcement across Alberta.

Examples of updated fine amounts:
• Distracted driving: $390 (up from $300)
• No seatbelt: $211 (up from $162)
• Non-compliant window glazing (tinted windows): $105 (up from $81)
• Speeding 20 km/h over: $228 (up from $175)
• Speeding 40 km/h over: $560 (up from $373)
• Driving without a licence: $421 (up from $324)

These increases are part of the province’s effort to improve road safety and reduce high‑risk driving behaviours. Following posted limits, avoiding distraction, and driving responsibly protects everyone on the road and can prevent a much more expensive day.

Drive safe, Edson.

Thank you Cenovus!

The Town of Edson is pleased to announce the full implementation and deployment of the Alberta First Responders Radio Communications System (AFRRCS) across our emergency response departments. This milestone was made possible to a generous $45,000 contribution from Cenovus, supporting the purchase of new radios and associated equipment.

The Town of Edson has now fully transitioned to AFRRCS, with all portable and mobile radios procured, programmed, installed, and operational across Fire Services, Enforcement Services, and the Emergency Coordination Centre. The upgraded system is performing exceptionally well and has already demonstrated significant improvements in clarity, reliability, and coverage for frontline responders.

ā€œReliable communication is essential for the protection of our community and our responders. Cenovus’s support helped ensure this project was completed to the highest standard, giving our emergency teams the tools they need to stay safe and connected. We are very grateful for their investment in public safety here in Edson and we’re thrilled that a local company was the successful bidder on this project as well.ā€
– Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara

These upgrades provide uninterrupted communication capabilities, improving responder safety and coordination during daily operations and emergency situations.

One of the most impactful benefits of AFRRCS is the seamless interoperability it provides with neighbouring municipalities and regional partners, including:
• Yellowhead County
• Woodlands County
• Hinton
• Jasper
• Stony Plain
• Whitecourt
• Provincial partners such as Alberta Wildfire, AEMA, and STARS

The ability to communicate directly with STARS during critical incidents is a significant enhancement, strengthening coordination and improving response capabilities during life threatening events.

Cenovus’s Contribution

Cenovus’s $45,000 investment was allocated directly to the purchase of AFRRCS radios and related equipment, ensuring that our first responders have reliable, high quality communication tools at their disposal. The Town of Edson extends its sincere appreciation to Cenovus for their partnership and commitment to community safety.

From Intention to Identity: Building a Culture of Positivity in Edson

Six months ago, we launched the Positive Ticket Program to celebrate the small actions that make a big difference in our community. Since June 2025, we’ve handed out 213 tickets for acts like:

-Wearing a helmet while riding (78 tickets)
-Staying active (46 tickets)
-Making good choices (44 tickets)
-Using manners (22 tickets)

These aren’t just behaviours, they’re steps toward building habits, practices, and ultimately a community where positivity is second nature.

Thanks to our amazing partners - McDonald’s, Tim Hortons, COLD Kettle, Edson and District Leisure Centre, and Canadian Tire - for making this possible with gift cards, prizes, and support.

Together, we’re turning good intentions into who we are.
