🦌🍂 HUNTING SEASON SAFETY | BE PREPARED BEFORE YOU HEAD INTO THE WOODS! 🍂

Perry Fire Department reminds everyone heading out hunting this season to make safety a priority. A little preparation can make a big difference!

✅ Tell someone your plans — Let them know where you’re going and when you expect to return.

✅ Carry your essentials — Bring a fully charged cell phone, flashlight, first-aid kit, water and extra clothing.

✅ Know your surroundings — Bring a map or GPS, and pay attention to landmarks as you travel.

✅ Hunt safely — Always identify your target and what lies beyond it. Wear bright orange or other required hunter-orange clothing, and follow all hunting regulations.

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK MAY BE ENDING — BUT FIRE SAFETY NEVER DOES. 🔥

As we close out Fire Prevention Week, we want to leave you with one important message:

Fire prevention is something we all share, every single day. 🏠❤️

Take a few minutes this weekend to make your home a little safer:

🔥 Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
🔥 Make sure everyone knows two ways out of your home
🔥 Keep exits and stairways clear
🔥 Stay in the kitchen while cooking
🔥 Keep anything that can burn away from heat sources
🔥 Make sure everyone in your home knows what to do when an alarm sounds

🔋 And don’t forget about lithium-ion batteries.

They power many of the things we use every day - phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, and more. Always use the proper charger, charge devices on a hard surface away from anything that can burn, and stop using a battery if it is swollen, damaged, unusually hot, leaking, or giving off an unusual odour.

Never charge devices under a pillow, on a bed or couch, and unplug them when charging is complete.

🚨 Don’t wait for an emergency to find out if you’re prepared.

Fire Prevention Week may only come once a year, but the habits we build can protect our families and our community 365 days a year.

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DO YOU KNOW HOW IT STARTED? 🔥

More than 150 years ago, a devastating fire changed the way we think about fire safety. Its lessons are still helping protect families and communities today.

On October 8, 1871, the Great Chicago Fire began. The fire burned for roughly two days, destroyed thousands of buildings, left approximately 100,000 people homeless, and claimed about 300 lives.

🐄 You may have heard the famous story that Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over a lantern and started the fire. While that story became part of history, the actual cause of the Great Chicago Fire was never determined.

The tragedy became a powerful reminder of how quickly fire can spread and why fire prevention, education, and preparedness are so important.

Today, Fire Prevention Week is observed each October, continuing a tradition of learning from the past to help prevent fires and save lives.

🔥 This Fire Prevention Week, take action at home. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, talk with your family about your home escape plan, and take a few minutes to look around your home for potential fire hazards.

We can’t change the fires of the past - but what we learn from them can help prevent the fires of tomorrow.

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: MYTH vs. TRUTH 🔥

📱 MYTH:
“It’s fine to leave my cell phone plugged in after it’s fully charged.”

🔥 TRUTH:
When your phone is fully charged, unplug it.

Leaving devices charging longer than necessary can create excess heat and add unnecessary risk - especially if the phone is on a bed, couch, under a pillow, or near anything that can burn.

✅ Charge on a hard, flat surface
✅ Use the correct charger for your device
✅ Replace damaged cords or chargers
✅ Unplug when charging is complete

📱🔌 100% charged? Time to unplug.

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK | KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS 🔥

Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere - from phones and laptops to power tools and e-bikes. While convenient, they can become dangerous if they fail.

One of the biggest risks is thermal runaway - a rapid chain reaction where an overheating battery cell causes others to overheat, potentially releasing intense heat, flammable gases and fire. And the danger may not be over when the flames are out. Batteries can reignite as other cells continue to heat up and fail.

⚠️ Know the warning signs:
• Battery or device is unusually hot
• Swelling or bulging
• Strange or unusual smell
• Hissing, popping or cracking sounds
• Leaking

If something doesn’t seem right, stop using the device immediately.

Lithium-ion battery fires can develop in seconds, and the danger can continue even after the fire appears to be out.

Stay informed. Stay safe. 🔥
