What Was Happening Wednesday?

In 1806, Fort Dunvegan was in the process of being constructed. One of the most important buildings was the Big House. It was a two-storey structure which included living quarters for the officers on the main floor and an apartment for the Chief Trader above, as well as a cellar, a kitchen, and a pantry. All clerical work and most of the business of trade was conducted in the Big House.

What might Dunvegan have looked like in the 1890s? This weekend, travel through time by taking a guided tour of our four historic buildings. They are fully furnished to look as they likely would have in 1896.

And this weekend only, if you take a tour, you’ll receive a flower to take home with you (thanks to our friends at Dunvegan Market Gardens). If you help us with planting a full container to be displayed around the Visitor Centre for the summer, we’ll not only give you a flower to take home, but also 25% off your admission fee*!

*Discount on admission fee only valid the same day you plant a container. Discount can only be claimed once.

What Was Happening Wednesday?

Starvation was a common theme at Fort Dunvegan throughout its history as a fur trade fort, and the winter of 1842-43 was particularly bad.

A week before this entry was made, Louis Bourassa cut himself on the leg with his axe. By June 22 the journal reports he is better and on June 27 he was weeding the potatoes.
