The old adage in firefighting is "to put out big fires you need big water"

With this is mind, members practiced on Tuesday night the use of heavy handlines and water monitors. With the hundreds of gallons per minute of discharge these lines can put out, proper technique is crucial to their safe and effective use

The Sparwood Fire Department will be conducting live fire training at Fire Hall #2 Training Grounds on starting Tuesday, July 28th, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, continuing every Tuesday evening for the next few weeks.

During training hours, you may notice small amounts of smoke in the air coming from the building. This is expected and part of the controlled exercise.

Interested in Watching? Residents are welcome to come watch firefighters in action. For safety reasons, please maintain a respectful distance from the training grounds.

Effective Thursday July 23rd (1:00 pm Mountain Time) campfires will be prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre. This also includes all backyard firepits within the District of Sparwood

Effective at 12 .p.m. (noon) Pacific Time on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Category 1 campfire will be prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre.

A Category 1 campfire refers to any fire that burns:
- No larger than 0.5 metres in height and 0.5 metres in width
- Used for recreational purposes or by a First Nation for ceremonial purposes

Also prohibited are the following equipment and activities:
- Air curtain burners
- Carbonizers
- Fireworks, as defined in the Fireworks Act of BC
- Binary exploding targets
- Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description
- Controlled air incinerators
- Sky lanterns
- Wood fired hot tubs, wood fired pizza ovens, and other wood fired devices unless vented through a structure that has a flue and is incorporated in a building

This prohibition does not include the use of outdoor stoves. As per the Wildfire Regulation, an outdoor stove is a CSA-rated or ULC-rated device used outdoors for cooking, heat or ambiance that burns charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel and has a flame height that is less than 15 cm tall. At Tuesday night's practice, the team braved the heat both outside and inside the training structure to practice different forms of fire attack. Crews also worked on effective hydraulic ventilation where the crew working from inside uses their fire stream through a window to push out smoke and hot gasses

On Tuesday night's practice, some of our newer members worked through the same skills that our recent 1001 graduates worked on over the weekend. Attacking dumpster fires and gas fires can be extremely hazardous so proficient nozzle and stream use is paramount

Over the weekend some more members of the fire department were going through their final evolutions to get their NFPA 1001 certification. This certification is recognized across North America as the standard to which firefighters train to.

Happy Canada Day from all of us at Sparwood Fire. Thanks to everyone who came out to the festivities at Centennial Square today and took part in the hose truck races. We had a great time watching kids (of all ages!) compete for the glory of being the ultimate Canadian Hoser 🤣

Sparwood Fire was happy to host swaths of (hopefully) future firefighters in the last week. From truck rides, to hall tours and hose practice, every child left with a big smile and valuable fire safety information

Outside of the Sparwood Coal Miner Days activities this weekend, the Sparwood Fire Department was proud to present the cheques from the 2026 Battle of the Bravest Charity Hockey Game to our well deserving recipients. Angel Flight East Kootenay was presented with $21,891 and the Elk Valley Su***de Task Force received $3,671 (total event raised $25,562!)

Thanks again to our amazing community and sponsors who made this event a great success. We look forward to the 2027 game to raise more funds for deserving organizations

Over the weekend, more members of the Sparwood Fire Department got certified in WFF1 (Wilderness Firefighter). This course trains structural firefighters to work in the interface zones between the municipality and the wilderness. This course is required for any fire fighters who wish to deploy to assist BC Wildfire protecting communities from approaching wildfires
