Effective at 1:00 p.m. (MDT) on August 28, 2026, the off-road vehicles (ORV) prohibition will be rescinded on Crown land throughout the Southeast Fire Centre.
Please read BC Wildfire Service's important post below for more information.

Effective tomorrow, Friday August 28, at noon PDT the Off Road Vehicle (ORV) prohibition is rescinded in the Southeast, Cariboo, Coastal and Kamloops Fire Centres.

We recognize that ORVs play an important role in recreation, hunting and accessing the outdoors for many. Restrictions are only considered when multiple factors indicate an elevated wildfire risk, heightened wildfire activity and limited capacity to respond to new fire starts.

With improving conditions in some regions of B.C., and cooler wetter weather in the forecast we are now able to rescind these prohibitions. We continue to monitor wildfire risk and prohibitions may be implemented or rescinded as conditions change.

We appreciate the patience and cooperation shown by ORV users during this period. We know many riders take fire prevention seriously and recreate responsibly on established roads and trails. If you're returning to the backcountry, we ask for your support in reporting any new wildfires through our app or by calling *5555.

📣We're looking for feedback on proposed enhancements to Station Square, one of our most important downtown event spaces.

Three concept options have been developed, each taking a different approach to public gathering space, seasonal use, parking, and traffic flow along a section of 6th Street. We’re also pursuing grant funding to support additional enhancements such as landscaping, shade trees, seating, bike parking, and other amenities.

🗣️The project team is holding an Open House on September 15. Drop by The Arts Station from 4:30-6:30 pm to chat about the project, ask questions, and provide your feedback.

🧑‍💻Can't make the Open House? Review the proposed concepts at letstalk.fernie.ca/StationSquare and fill out a short survey by September 21 to tell us what's important to you.

💬Your input will be used to identify community priorities and help guide refinement of a preferred concept.

The City of Fernie manages and maintains St. Margaret's Cemetery, an important place of remembrance and a valued part of our community's history.

🤝We would like to thank residents who have recently expressed interest in helping care for and preserve this special place. As interest in volunteer activities grows, we encourage everyone to approach any work with care and respect. Here are some things to consider:

The City is responsible for overall maintenance and operation of the cemetery grounds, including common areas, trees, and roads. Plot holders and families are responsible for grave markers and their upkeep.

Heavy equipment or machinery should not be used for volunteer activities within the cemetery. The cemetery contains historic monuments, grave sites, and sensitive ground conditions that can be damaged from heavy equipment.

Many gravesites, monuments, and memorials remain important to families and loved ones, and any work on individual sites should be undertaken with the appropriate permission.

❤️Together, we can help ensure St. Margaret's Cemetery remains a respectful place of remembrance for current and future generations.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36, Fernie, BC is celebrating their 100th year anniversary with a block party on September 5!
🍁The City is happy to be providing in-kind support for the event, including painting a Legion-themed crosswalk to commemorate the milestone.
Keep an eye out for the Royal Canadian Legion Flag flying at City Hall until September 13!
🚧Please note the following road closures will be in place for the event, starting at 8 a.m. on September 5:
1st Avenue from the Arts Station to 5th Street.
6th Street from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue.
