Fire prevention week is near so as we focus our efforts on wildfire mitigation, let's take some time to Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!

Only two more sleeps until Fire Prevention Week™ kicks off!

This year, the theme is "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety." Knowing the different sounds smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make and knowing what to do when an alarm sounds will keep you and your family safe. It's important that when an alarm makes noises – a beeping sound or a chirping sound – you take action.

Your challenge is to look around your home and ensure you have working smoke alarms in all the right locations – inside and outside every sleeping area and on every level. If you have at least one fuel-burning appliance, such as a fireplace (wood or gas), gas stove or gas water heater, you should also have working CO alarms. Don’t have them? Install them! Don’t work? Change the batteries or replace the entire unit!

And don't forget about the poster and video contest open to all students, from kindergarten to grade 12, attending an Indigenous, public or independent school in the province. The contest deadline is October 22 and there are some fantastic prizes to be won!

On Saturday the Lower Timberline neighbourhood held their first FireSmart work day moving them one step closer to becoming a recognised FireSmart neighbourhood. All this hard work will go a long way to protecting their properties from wildfire.

On a vey rainy Saturday about a dozen Upper Alpine Trails folks came out and had a very successful and productive work day applying FireSmart techniques to a large area of forest. The soggy but enthusiastic workers enjoyed a quick lunch together after the work was finished.

Excellent work by BC Wildfire Service, thank you very much for your service!!

Due to significant effort from the BC Wildfire Service and provincial, First Nation, national and international partner agencies, the White Rock Lake wildfire (K61884) is now considered ‘Being Held’. The wildfire is not likely to spread beyond determined containment lines due to the suppression carried out by the BC Wildfire Service.

Over the last 52 days, firefighters and support personnel from around the world have maintained response efforts on the White Rock Lake wildfire. The BC Wildfire Service thanks the commitment of heavy equipment operators, helicopter pilots, camp kitchen operators, facility managers, incident support staff, security staff, among countless others, to keep firefighters supported on the ground.

Campfires permitted noon today, please be responsible.

The combination of a return to more seasonal weather conditions, with rainfall and cooler temperatures and decreased fire danger ratings, have reduced the risk of wildfires in southeastern B.C.

Effective at noon on Friday, Aug. 27, 2021, campfires will be permitted in the Cranbrook, Invermere, Columbia, Arrow and Kootenay Lake fire zones. However, campfires will remain prohibited in the Boundary fire zone.

The current prohibition against any open fire larger than a campfire (i.e., larger than 0.5 metres wide by 0.5 metres high) remains in effect throughout the Southeast Fire Centre. A map of the affected areas and their associated prohibitions is available online: http://ow.ly/JGbf50FXhcY
