400 Year Old Silver Coin Discovery = Unlimited Poppy Points ❤

One Dutch silver coin. Two budding archaeologists. One unforgettable family adventure.
This week, brothers Thomas and Conor O’Brien made an incredible discovery during our Dig for a Day program: a rare Dutch 2 stuiver silver coin, minted in the early 1600s.
More than 400 years ago, this silver coin crossed the Atlantic to the Colony of Avalon, where it was lost beneath the soil. It remained hidden for centuries until Thomas and Conor brought it back into the light.
When it was minted, it's value could buy a beer. Today, it’s buying smiles and filling imaginations instead.

To make the day even more special, the boys shared the experience with their poppy, Jim Burton, who certainly earned unlimited poppy points for introducing his grandsons to archaeology. Better yet, Thomas and Conor’s names are now permanently recorded on the artifact tag, becoming part of the archaeological record connected to this rare and remarkable discovery.

The discoveries don't end there! This Friday at 1:30 pm, please join us for two fascinating guest speakers.

Travel through history with Dr. Julia Stryker as she explores the remarkable stories of Women at Sea, highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of women to maritime history.
Then hear from Jared T. Hogan, whose presentation on Indigenous History and Representation examines Indigenous history in Newfoundland and Labrador while exploring respectful representation, authentic storytelling, and meaningful relationships between museums and Indigenous communities.

Forget a penny for your thoughts… we’ll offer you a silver stuiver’s worth of history instead. 😉

Who Were the First People of Ferryland?

Perhaps, the Beothuk.

Today, archaeologists have begun searching for the evidence that may help answer that question.

For the first time in decades, archaeologists have returned to investigate the Beothuk occupation at Ferryland, the southernmost known Beothuk site in Newfoundland.
Evidence suggests the Beothuk were coming to Ferryland at least a century before the Colony of Avalon was established, when European migratory fishermen first visited these shores.
We know the Beothuk were here. But two questions have remained unanswered: When did they come to Ferryland, and why? Today, the search for those answers begins again.
To truly tell the story of the Colony of Avalon, we must also tell the story of the people who were here long before the colony itself. This renewed investigation offers a rare opportunity to better understand the Beothuk presence at Ferryland and tell the earliest known chapter in the story of the place that would one day become the Colony of Avalon.

Today during their visit, Junior Canadian Rangers from communities across Northern Newfoundland and Labrador witnessed the reopening of this investigation. As archaeologist Steve Mills shared its significance, the group listened with quiet attention, a reminder of why it is so important that the history of the Beothuk continues to be remembered, explored, and shared.

Want to learn more? Join archaeologist Steve Mills this Thursday, July 16, at 1:30 p.m. for “Archaeology of Newfoundland’s Southern Shore,” the next presentation in our Summer Speaker Series.

Take the King’s Shilling....

More than 400 years ago, the phrase “take the King’s shilling” meant pledging service to the English Crown.

Today, one emerged from the past.

This James I silver shilling (1619 to 1625) lay hidden beneath the soil at the Colony of Avalon for over 400 years before being uncovered during archaeological excavations.
What makes this discovery especially remarkable is its exceptional preservation. The obverse (front) of the coin left an incredibly detailed imprint in an associated piece of wood, an uncommon archaeological occurrence that preserved a single moment in time.

Through the careful work of our archaeology and conservation teams, both the coin and its remarkable imprint have been revealed, offering a rare glimpse into everyday life at one of North America’s earliest English colonies.

Discovered by Neil Jordan, our longtime dig site supervisor and a 35 year veteran of the Colony of Avalon, this discovery preserves not only a coin, but a fleeting moment from the early 1600s.
Some took the King’s shilling. History kept this one… until now.

Our Green Team Is Putting Down Roots at the Colony of Avalon!

The Colony of Avalon is thrilled to welcome our Green Team from the Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador. Living on the Irish Loop, we might be a little biased… but green has always been our favourite colour! 🍀

These enthusiastic young leaders are already hard at work caring for our historic site, collecting caplin from the beach to naturally fertilize our 17th century Kitchen Garden, just as people did centuries ago. After all, that’s how we roll in Ferryland!

The team also had the opportunity to meet CBC reporter Patrick Butler, a Green Team alumnus, who was visiting the Colony to cover a story. Once a Green Team member, always an Evergreen! 🌲😉

This summer this dynamic duo will be leading two exciting new family experiences that bring history to life.
