Meet your Firefighter!

Name: Nick Dystra

Station: Station 2 – Burdett

Length of Service: 18-19 Years

I joined the fire service because… the Burdett department had a campaign for a call out for community people to join. My wife and I had just recently moved back from Lethbridge, and I was looking for a way I could be more involved with the community. I showed up to one practice, and I was hooked ever since. The longer I’ve been on the department the more I have enjoyed the comradery between all the members, and the relationships I have built while taking the offered training courses. As the days have turned to years the reason stays the same, but it also changes to, "that I want to be involved in the community, but what can I do to help my community?"

I stayed because… of the friendships made, memories made, and the lifelong learning that never stops and always changes. Always something new around each bend. The challenge of each situation is always changing to push myself and my thought process to accomplish the task at hand.

One thing I didn't expect about the fire service… how my perspective has changed. You see people on their worst days, but when they see us roll up, relief fills them and I can’t help to think that just by showing up, it gives them hope.

Outside the fire service… I am a husband to my lovely wife Karyn and a dad to three kids: Issy, Logan, and Nolan. I farm during spring through fall and work during the winter at a local feedlot. I’m a 4-H leader in our local 4-H club helping with the turf grass (racing mower) members. In my spare time I like to collect and build Lego.

The Forty Mile Fire Service is now accepting applications for Volunteer Paid on Call Firefighters, county-wide.

New Firefighters will train together through our recruit program, learning communication, fire protection & rescue tactics, medical skills, and more. You will develop hands-on skills that have a lasting impact on your community.

I joined the fire service because… I’ve always enjoyed operating big trucks and equipment from a very young age. I like the adrenaline and the rush, it seems like I function well under that pressure and uncertainty. I suppose I developed that in the childhood environment that I grew up in, which I can now use to care for humanity and serve the community during an emergency.

I stayed because… I love learning new things and being in the fire service. I realized that I have endless opportunities for learning and growth. There are always new things to learn and new skills to practice, even refreshing skills that I haven't used much. The fun never ends.

One thing I didn't expect about the fire service… was how much it would give back to me. I thought I would only be giving and serving, but it has provided me so much more then what I can ever give.

Outside the fire service… I am blessed to be a wife and mother of 2 amazing children that I enjoy raising and doing life together with. I have a seasonal job working at a farm that I really enjoy, I am in school to become an Emergency Medical Responder, as well as cleaning my good friend’s house once a week.

We will start by introducing you to some of our firefighters throughout the year and recognize their service to the community. In their own words they will tell you why they continue to step forward and encourage others to follow in their footsteps. We are accepting applications now for volunteer paid-on-call firefighters in all districts.

Buying a product with a lithium-ion battery? Pause for a quick safety check. Look for the stamp from a trusted testing lab. No stamp? Big risk. Protect yourself and your home.
With tools in use, and safety in mind choose products that pass the test!

Lithium-ion batteries power many of our devices, but they can pose a serious fire risk if not handled safely. Always charge devices on a hard, non-flammable surface and never on your bed, couch, or under a pillow. When your device reaches 100 percent, unplug it!
When devices heat up, stay cool with safe charging habits.

Did you know that a lithium-ion battery could spark a fire if disposed of in the trash or recycling bin? Instead, drop it off at your nearest battery recycling location to prevent fires and protect your community.

🚨🚨Our firefighters are always training and preparing to keep our community safe, just as you can help keep your home safe by charging devices the right way.
Phones, laptops, e-bikes, and power tools all use lithium-ion batteries, and each can be a fire risk if not charged safely. Always use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Don’t ignore frayed or faulty cords! If it only works when you bend it, it’s time to replace it.
Charge with care, avoid a scare.
