MAY 29th ON TREATY ANNUITY PAYMENTS. FYI AND HERE IS SOME INFO BEFORE HAND BELOW BUT THIS SHOULD BE PRESENTED BY LAWYERS AND TO EVERY COMMUNITY OR PACKAGES FOR MEMBERS.

~INFORMATION AND HISTORY ON TREATY ANNUITY~ THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING WE HAVE ALONG WAYS TO GO.

NO MATTER WHAT THIS COURT CASE AND DOLLARS WILL GO AHEAD FOR OUR PEOPLE OF MIKISEW. It doesn’t matter what leadership is in place, this can’t be promised by ONE PERSON BECASUE IT’S EVERYONES. We must take our time with this court case and not take first offer and sell out for less than it’s worth. We must negotiate a fair equitable deal for our people and future generations.

Treaty 8 was signed on 21 June 1899 by the Crown and First Nations of the Lesser Slave Lake area. Following Lesser Slave Lake, the commissioners split up in order to cover more ground. James Ross and James McKenna arrived at Fort Chipewyan, 13 July 1899 Adhesion was signed.
Immediate cash payments for everyone were to be followed by smaller annual payments, with larger amounts going to chiefs and headmen. Initial payments were set at $32 for chiefs, $22 for headmen and $12 for others.

**While annuities were set at $25 for chiefs, $15 for headmen and $5 for others. Salaries for teachers to instruct the children were also included in the treaty terms.**

Records of later treaties are more explicit about the parties’ understandings of treaty annuities. These suggest that several meanings may have co-existed:
Compensation for land.
Contribution to economy.
Material diplomacy.
Promise of annual meetings. Annuities were (and are) paid annually and in person.

Also, was that $5 just a certificate for gold? What was the weight of that gold?
INFLATION? Members that have past? IT’S GOING TO BE A LONG NEGOTIATION (billions)

This financial commitment from the crown will last forever and will continue into the future. This court case is to correct the amount in $ to our Nation for our land that is rich in resources, forestry, mining, and untouched ecosystems.

THIS IS NOT A QUICK EASY COURT CASE AND IT IS WORTH MORE THAN SETTLING EARLIER ON WITH CANADA.

Is there meetings in Chip coming up? If there is why isn’t it posted in town and on reserve per our code.

Why can the other nation have posters and signage up everywhere advising town of everything but Mikisew cannot?

Is it even a AGM

Something like a code meeting should be mailed to each member to have most amount of input/ people attending not just staff and supporters.

They preach on fair process and Input from all members in all locations but don’t act on it.

Elders and not every member can access Mikisew’s Facebook, or don’t receive information on the email list or can’t view anything in town with no formal notice.
Thus having no chance to voice opinions and concerns with performance or process of current leaders in place for our people.

Why is it so hard to follow governance code? They expect to talk about governance code when no locations have had input creating it or having draft copies to read. (All locations as we are all members)
How do we as members have faith in a council who can’t even govern themselves around the current code to pass a new one that benefits them?

Debt owed, living rent and utility free while collecting a cheque, bribing votes with promise of $ from Cows and ploughs, threatening current members at the table and past similarities in previous terms that went to court without informing members on cost… because that’s an ethical code broken without consequences. -Russell

Living out of town collecting living allowance for last 1year and 2 months, travelling in town and telling people she lives on reserve in devils gate. Well, an elder lives out there and we travel the river systems and don’t see her around… come back home and reside in Chip or reserves for entire term is what code says.- Lydia

Council and past Chief allowing these codes to be broken but expect us to allow them to change the codes…

How do you have two salary increases for council, a promise to increase wages/salary for Mikisew tech with no delivery, put the staff on a gag order to not speak out, not have an AUDIT for us to see how last years dollars worked for us and you are not able to show us key performance indicators on why council to deserve such money plus travel without results.

It’s been five days since we had letter of resignation go in from Peter.
Why hasn’t there been a public address to membership notifying of resignation?

Why hasn’t there been a by-election date set within 5 days as states in 16.1 when Council received resignation letter?

Why are we left in the dark while one seat sits vacant the Chief’s seat with more than 90 days left in the term? If one wants to run for Chief from council they must resign first and then there will be by-election for Chief and Councillor.

We should have a meeting all members at the hall immediately to discuss as members about our Chief resigning and next steps moving forward.
