Our Roaming Air Monitor (RAM) van will be in Kitimat throughout this summer to support air quality monitoring in the community.

The RAM is a mobile unit designed to measure air quality while on the move or at a fixed location. As an additional monitoring point alongside the five fixed provincial air monitoring stations in Kitimat, it helps strengthen the overall monitoring network in the area.

What makes the RAM unique is its mobility - it can be deployed to specific locations and allows us to gather detailed, localized data where it’s needed most.

So why does this matter? Monitoring air quality is an important part of what we do to protect public safety and the environment. By collecting real-time data, the RAM helps us assess emissions from energy resource activities and ensure they meet strict regulatory requirements.

It was a pleasure to welcome a delegation of government officials from the Province of Río Negro, Argentina, to the BC Energy Regulator.

As part of their visit to British Columbia, the delegation met with BCER representatives to learn more about our regulatory approach to liquefied natural gas facilities, pipelines and associated infrastructure.

The BCER was proud to share insights on our one-window, full-lifecycle regulatory framework, including technical review processes, safety and environmental oversight, risk management and our work with First Nations.

We value the opportunity to exchange knowledge with other jurisdictions and share regulatory experience that supports informed decision-making and responsible energy oversight.

Je aa haanach'e! — How are you?

BCER staff were grateful to take part in Doig River First Nation’s annual Doig Day yesterday, a hands-on celebration of Tsaa? Che ne Dene culture and traditions.

Participants, including hundreds of Grade 4 students and guests, were welcomed onto the lands of Doig River First Nation to learn about traditional practices including stretching and scraping Hadaa azis (moose hide) using a traditional Anǫgude (bone scraper), dancing alongside the Doig River Drummers and observing how meat is traditionally prepared and dried over a smoky fire.

BCER staff were pleased to support the day by helping with the BBQ.

Thank you to Doig River First Nation for welcoming us once again to share this meaningful day of learning, connection and community.

Looking for a way to quickly understand energy infrastructure near an incident?

BCER’s All Hazards Map helps users locate permitted energy resource activity infrastructure across B.C. within a defined area, whether it’s a wildfire perimeter or another point of interest. The tool combines mapping and reporting to provide clear insights.

As Clean Energy BC's Generate 2026 conference wraps up in Vancouver, the BCER is grateful for the opportunity to connect with clean energy leaders, First Nations, industry partners, government representatives and project proponents involved in renewable energy development in B.C.

Events like Generate are an important reminder that progress is built not only through policy and process, but through the conversations, collaboration and relationships that help move shared priorities forward.

Thank you to Clean Energy BC for bringing together such a valuable forum for dialogue and connection across the sector. As the single-window, full-lifecycle regulator for renewable energy projects in B.C., we appreciated the thoughtful questions, insights and feedback from everyone who joined our sessions and visited our booth.

One of the BCER’s key roles is to review and monitor B.C.’s energy resource activities to help protect public safety and the environment. This includes oversight of flaring and associated emissions.

Flaring is the controlled burning of gas. It is an important safety measure at LNG facilities used to manage gas flows and pressure during certain operating conditions, such as process upsets and restarts. Compared with directly venting gas into the atmosphere, flaring results in reduced pollution and greenhouse gases.

The BCER continues to actively oversee LNG Canada’s operations in Kitimat, including ongoing work to reduce flaring volumes. BCER technical experts review flaring and emissions information submitted by LNG Canada, conduct inspections and take compliance actions where required, including the recent issuance of an enforcement order to address and prevent black smoke emissions from flaring.

Air quality in the Kitimat Valley is monitored through the provincial air monitoring network, with data publicly available in real time from 6 monitoring stations in the Kitimat area. Since issuing LNG Canada’s air waste discharge permit, those stations have not recorded measurements above B.C. Ambient Air Quality Objectives.

In response to elevated flaring activity, the BCER requested an updated air quality assessment by a third-party Qualified Professional. That assessment, completed in October 2025, found the effect of the increased flaring volumes on local air quality was small to negligible and not discernible from other local sources.
