A statement from the City of Dawson Creek:
📣 City Reaffirms Parks and Green Spaces Are for Everyone
The City of Dawson Creek is aware of a video circulating in the community that includes statements suggesting that City parks are only for Canadian citizens and that people with disabilities or residents who have relocated to Dawson Creek from other countries do not belong in these public spaces.
The City strongly and unequivocally rejects these statements.
Dawson Creek is a welcoming community made up of people from many backgrounds, cultures and countries. We are proud of the diversity that contributes to the strength and character of our community.
Our parks and green spaces are public spaces for everyone to enjoy. This includes children, adults, families, newcomers, long-time residents and people of all abilities.
The City is also actively working to identify opportunities to make Dawson Creek a community where people of all abilities can participate, connect and thrive. Accessibility and inclusion are important considerations as we plan and improve our public spaces and services.
Mayor and Council do not condone or support the statements made in the video. They do not reflect the values of the City of Dawson Creek or the community we strive to be.
“We want to be clear that everyone is welcome in our parks and public spaces,” said Mayor Darcy Dober. “Dawson Creek is a community that values people from all backgrounds and abilities. We may not always agree on everything, but respect, inclusion and treating one another with dignity are values we should all be able to share.”
The City encourages residents to continue treating one another with respect and to help foster a community where everyone feels welcome and included.
