Hey there, I’m Sarah. I'm a lover of all things flora and fauna with a touch of fantasy, which is the inspiration behind much of my work. I’m originally from Saskatoon, SK and completed my art education in Calgary, AB. My wife grew up here and when the opportunity presented itself for her work, we decided to move our life to Taylor. Having always lived in big cities, life in Taylor was definitely an adjustment. Growing up, my grandparents lived in a log cabin in the mountains of Montana and I was always out exploring the surrounding woodlands with my brothers. Being in Taylor reminded me so much of those memories and made me feel like this is the right place to be.

While I started out in the Graphic Design field, I felt as though I couldn’t completely express my style in my work. In October of 2019, I returned to my roots and began painting again. I enjoy the unpredictability of using recycled and reusable materials because I never know what I’ll be creating next. The wood I use is collected from trees that have fallen in the woods near my home. In November of 2019, I had my first go at being a vendor at craft fairs and I would love to be at more events this year, especially Pride. I think I will see a big shift in the next year as I get back into exploring my artistic style.

I tend to be a pretty restless person, so I always have ideas brewing for new projects. Right now, I am collaborating with another local artist on the opportunity to teach all skill level classes combining what we both love to make. I love meeting local artists, but admittedly, I am a bit of a studio hermit. If anyone ever wants to drink tea late into the night and paint, I’m over here!

Custom orders are open, so feel free to reach out to me! I love hearing peoples’ ideas that fall right into the wildflowers, herbs, animals, and magic vibe. Follow along on my Instagram for a sneak peek into my process, weird midnight crafts with things like garlic, and to see new releases to my Etsy shop.

This week’s spotlight: BC Family Law - MacLean Family Law Group

The Fort St. John branch of MacLean Law is one of six of the MacLean Law offices currently operating in British Columbia and Alberta. Our founder, Lorne MacLean QC, widely respected as one of the most experienced high net worth Family Law and Divorce lawyers in Canada, first established MacLean Law in 1983 in Vancouver. In the past 36 years, the business grew to include offices in Fort St. John, Surrey, Richmond, Kelowna, and Calgary. The Fort St. John office opened in 2005 at its current location at 9503 100 Avenue after Lorne MacLean QC built the building on what was then a vacant lot.

Drawing on the depth and breadth of our expertise, experience, and well-honed emotional intelligence, MacLean Law made it our purpose to help distill the complicated and challenging law in order to break through to strategic, creative, practical and positive family solutions. The people of the Peace Region need trusted local legal counsel so they are not forced to pay increased costs for out-of-town lawyers. Judges in the region welcome experienced and local counsel, as well as articled students, as that greatly increases access to justice and reduces wait times for the members of the community. The people of the Peace Region greatly benefit by having trusted advisors like the local and tenacious MacLean Law family, immigration and civil litigation lawyers that they can form life-long professional relationships with. The Fort St. John branch currently consists of four full-time employees who reside permanently in Fort St. John.

Naomi Callingham is our friendly receptionist and legal admin assistant. She is from the West Coast but moved to Northern BC over 6 years ago. She is raising her two lovely children here with her husband. Their family loves to adventure, hike, pick Saskatoon berries, play in the rivers, snowshoe, visiting the Pomeroy Sports Centre walking track, and take part in community events. She loves working at MacLean Law helping the people of the North resolve their legal matters.

Candice Pappenberger is our paralegal and has been with the firm since 2009 and is the longest-serving employee at the office. She brings a wealth of knowledge, warmth, understanding, and patience. She has called the Energetic City home for over 10 years, and all three of her children have been born and raised here. Candice and her family regularly enjoy the many outdoor recreational opportunities that this area has to offer including going ice-fishing, tobogganing and snowmobiling in the winter, and hiking, camping and quading in the summer.

Jaye Rutledge is the lawyer at the Fort St. John branch of MacLean Law. Jaye was recently called to the British Columbia bar, having just completed her one-year articling apprenticeship in Fort St. John. Jaye has spent the majority of her life in Fort St. John and is thrilled to be back following the completion of her law degree at the University of Victoria. During law school Jaye gained experience in northern legal practice by completing co-op positions with Yukon Legal Aid and the resource development branch of the Government of the Northwest Territories. Jaye is transgender and happy to offer pro bono services to low income LGBTQ2S members in Fort St. John and the surrounding community.

Anastasiya Sadovska is currently an articled student and anticipates being admitted to the British Columbia bar in May of 2020 and to the Alberta bar in August of 2020. Anastasiya has been with MacLean Law since 2018 when she accepted a summer student position and then returned as in articled student upon graduating from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. Anastasiya was born and raised in Ukraine and is conversational in Ukrainian and Russian. She is now actively involved in the community and sits on the board of directors of Community Bridge, a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing counselling and support services to the community.

Hey there, my name is Brandyn. Although I don't typically show it, I am the face behind Whiskey 'n' Walnut Woodworks. I like a good whiskey, and I love walnut, but I do not limit myself to either! I moved to Fort St. John October last year for work, which is about the time that woodworking became (almost) a second full-time job.

I began tinkering with small projects in February 2019 for the sole purpose of filling my down time after work. I started with my one grandfather's 1938 Craftsman table saw and his jointer, and I began to add tools as orders slowly started to flow in. I can now do a wide variety of projects, including custom designs with my CNC machine. I've made everything from trays, charcuterie boards, coasters, signs, cutting boards, and am slowly testing the waters with small furniture and tables.

I have intermittently coached lacrosse and football throughout the last 8 years and hope to get back into it this year if all goes well. I am also aiming to start becoming a part of local farmer's markets now that Christmas orders have been checked off the list. I look forward to meeting you all and thank you very much for the support thus far!

“Hi! – I’m Katie, and I am the person behind River Road Welding Caps. My husband is a pipeline welder here in Fort St. John and was always complaining about his welding caps not fitting the way he wanted. It was always too tight, too lose, or it didn’t cover his ears or his neck the way he needed. Always up for a challenge, I got to work sewing. I knew I could make something better than what he had, I just had to take the time to figure it out.

With a lot of trial and error, and his invaluable advice, we came up with ‘the perfect hat’. Before I knew it, word had spread, and my husband's friends and coworkers were contacting me asking me to make them welding hats too. I figured I would start this small little side business just for fun and it has taken off beyond anything I could have imagined!

These hats are made for the person wearing them, and that's what sets them apart from the typical hat you can buy off the internet or from a workwear store. I try my best to use locally owned stores to supply my little business, as keeping local is so important to me. Community supporting community... that's what it's all about. I haven’t lived in Fort St. John for very long (only one short year), but I've been visiting Fort St. John on a regular basis for the last four years prior to moving here. I'm so happy to be a part of the community and can’t wait to see what the future has in store!”
