After being closed following the 2023 wildfire, Salt River Meadows Trail will reopen to visitors this Friday, September 4, 2026.

🔥Fire Information Update – Friday, August 28, 2026

There have been no new fires in Wood Buffalo National Park since the last update.

Fire Danger
The current fire danger level for Wood Buffalo National Park is: VERY HIGH

🔥Active wildfires

Out of Control

🔥2026WB024
Location: This fire is located near Needle Lake approximately 10 km west of Highway 5 and 143 km west of Fort Smith.
Status: This fire is estimated to be 207 ha in size and is classified as out of control.
Details: This lightning-caused wildfire was first detected during routine patrols on August 23. This week, fire crews gained ground access to the fire and have been actively addressing priority areas, including spot fires located east of the main fire. Suppression efforts are being supported by two helicopters conducting bucketing operations.

At this time, wildfire 2026WB024 is not threatening Highway 5, other infrastructure, or communities. The fire's western flank is anchored on Needle Lake, and the fuels between the fire and Highway 5 are discontinuous, reducing the potential for fire spread toward the road.

Weather

Within Wood Buffalo National Park, temperatures on Friday are expected to reach 22 to 24°C, with minimum relative humidity between 55% and 60%. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the day and evening. Winds will be from the southwest at 15 km/h, gusting to 35 km/h.

Unsettled weather is expected to continue through the weekend and into early next week, with scattered showers and temperatures ranging from the mid-teens to low 20s. While brief drying periods are possible, no prolonged warm or dry conditions are forecast.

Smoke from wildfires inside and outside Wood Buffalo National Park may be visible across the region, depending on wind conditions.

🌎 Earlier this month, Canada welcomed a third UNESCO Reactive Monitoring Mission to Wood Buffalo National Park World Heritage Site.

The missions brought together Indigenous nations, non-governmental organizations, Crown corporations and, provincial, territorial and federal government departments and agencies to speak with delegates from the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Key topics that shaped discussion at this year’s Mission included:
📌Indigenous stewardship and management in Wood Buffalo National Park
📌Integrated Research and Monitoring in the Peace-Athabasca Delta
📌Hydrology, Ecological Flows and Water Management
📌Wood bison and whooping crane species and habitat conservation

Construction on Highway 5 continues with chip sealing starting today at the Wood Buffalo National Park boundary at the Little Buffalo River.

What to expect:

• Traffic delays may occur, but are expected to be limited to 30 minutes or less
• Construction activity and reduced speeds in the work zone

🌎 What is a UNESCO Reactive Monitoring Mission?

A UNESCO Reactive Monitoring Mission is a site visit by the World Heritage Centre to evaluate the state of conservation for a World Heritage Site facing significant threats.

Canada welcomed UNESCO Reactive Monitoring Missions to Wood Buffalo National Park World Heritage Site in 2016, 2022, and August 2026 to evaluate the protection and maintenance of the park’s Outstanding Universal Value.

There is one new fire in Wood Buffalo National Park since the last update.

Fire Danger
The current fire danger level for Wood Buffalo National Park is: HIGH

🔥Active wildfires

📍Location: Approximately 6 km west of Highway 5.
➡️ Status: Estimated at 30.4 ha in size and is classified as out of control.
ℹ️ Details: This new lightning caused fire was confirmed at 12.45pm today by a Parks Canada patrol flight. One bucketing helicopter was immediately deployed and continues suppression efforts. The wildfire is currently exhibiting high fire activity, preventing crews from landing safely. Parks Canada continues to monitor conditions closely and will deploy firefighters directly to the fire as soon as it is safe to do so.

At this time, there is no anticipated impact to travel on Highway 5. The wildfire is located approximately 6 km west of the highway, and the fuels between the wildfire and Highway 5 are discontinuous, reducing the potential for the fire to spread toward the road. Motorists may observe smoke in the area; however, no impacts to traffic are anticipated at this time. Parks Canada continues to monitor conditions closely, and travellers should remain alert for smoke and changing conditions.

The following fires remain under their previous classifications with no change in size, exhibiting low to no fire behaviour and showing no observed growth.

Smoke from 2026WB0024 may be visible from Highway 5 in the northern portion of the park, particularly near the Highway 5 and Highway 6 junction. Smoke from wildfires both inside and outside Wood Buffalo National Park may also be visible across the region, depending on wind conditions.
