BetterYourself365 Tina & Michael LeBlanc at BetterYourself365 Counselling Clinic
Helping people better themselves first, to create healthier relationships. Hi!

Deeper connection and attachment healing can happen with EFT counselling. We’re Tina and Michael, Licensed Counselling Therapists and a happily married couple. We help busy, overstretched couples work efficiently as a team and navigate their lives by teaching them the essential habits to create a strong, loving connection. We do this through couples counselling, online courses, our 10 Habits of Happy Couples book, and Live couples events. These services are all tailored to couples who need help fast and in a way that fits their demanding schedules.

Coping Through Avoidance or Substance Use – Learn about the impact on your relationship and what to do about it
When stress feels too heavy, many people cope by overworking, drinking, using substances, scrolling, gaming, or staying constantly busy.
These behaviours can bring temporary relief, but over time they can also reduce emotional presence and create distance in a relationship.
In this Live Talk, Tina and Michael will explore why these coping patterns develop, how they can affect trust and connection, and how individual therapy can help someone understand what they are avoiding, manage stress differently, and become more emotionally available.
Join us live and bring your questions.

COPING THROUGH AVOIDANCE OR SUBSTANCE USE – Learn about the impact on your relationship and what to do about it
When stress feels overwhelming, do you find yourself working longer hours, reaching for a drink, endlessly scrolling, or finding other ways to avoid what you are feeling?
Coping behaviours like overworking, drinking, using substances, gaming, or scrolling can provide temporary relief from stress and emotional discomfort. They can help a person disconnect from difficult feelings for a little while. But over time, these patterns can also reduce emotional presence, create distance, and leave a partner feeling alone in the relationship.
In this Facebook Live, Tina and Michael will explore why people turn to avoidance or substance use, how these coping strategies can develop from an attachment perspective, and the impact they can have on trust, communication, intimacy, and emotional connection.
They will also discuss how individual therapy can help someone better understand what they are trying to escape or numb, develop healthier ways of managing difficult emotions, and become more emotionally available in their relationship.
This conversation is especially relevant for individuals who recognize that they may be coping by staying constantly busy, withdrawing, drinking, using substances, or distracting themselves—and for partners who feel increasingly disconnected from someone they care about.
As always, Tina and Michael will draw from their real-life experiences as therapists and their belief that meaningful relationship change often starts with better understanding yourself first.

In order to be your best self, it all starts by listening to your body.
If you feel tired, it’s probably time to slow down and rest.

If you feel drained, it might be that you are overstimulated and need to spend some time alone.

If you feel mentally or emotionally stuck, it might mean that you need to take a break and reflect on what is going on internally- don’t be afraid to tune inwards.

Your body tells you everything you need to know. Pay attention.

The coping strategies that protected you at age 8 may now be creating challenges at age 38.

As children, we absorb messages about ourselves, our emotions, our needs, and our place in the family, often without realizing it.

For example, you may have learned that speaking up wasn't safe, so staying quiet became the best way to avoid conflict. Or maybe a parent was absent at work a lot and you may have become the responsible one—taking care of others while learning to put your own needs last. Or maybe you had a clear message that the only acceptable emotion was anger, and everything else you need to ‘get a thicker skin’.

These messages will create coping strategies out of survival at the time with our limited capacities in childhood, but then they become habit and we don’t always recognize the impact this has in our adulthood, especially in our important relationships.

Examples:
- Staying quiet
- Avoiding conflict
- Taking care of everyone
- Never asking for help

In individual therapy, we can help you explore whether these old survival strategies are still serving you today. This isn't about blaming your family. It's about understanding how your experiences shaped you so you can make intentional choices moving forward.

Our therapists at the clinic can help you work toward developing new ways of responding that honour your needs, strengthen your relationships, and help you feel more confident about yourself.

For many people, ADHD is much more than being distracted or forgetful. It can look like constantly feeling overwhelmed, struggling to stay organized, battling self-doubt, or feeling frustrated that life seems harder than it should.

You may have spent years being told you're lazy, careless, too much, or not trying hard enough when the reality is that your brain simply works differently.
Living with ADHD can impact your confidence, relationships, work, emotional regulation, and ability to follow through on the things that matter most to you.

Mikey can support you in understanding your unique strengths and challenges. Through a compassionate and practical approach, she helps clients better understand their emotions, build effective coping strategies, strengthen relationships, and reduce the shame that often accompanies ADHD.
You don't have to keep fighting your brain alone.
