John Howard Society of Fredericton A not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping people reenter mainstream society. The John Howard Society of Fredericton follows a set of seven core values.

The John Howard Society of Fredericton is a community based non-profit organization.Our purpose is to proactively stop crime and assist inmates and ex-offenders, reenter mainstream society. We accomplish both of these goals through the use of multiple programs and services. People have the right to live in a safe and peaceful society as well as the responsibility implied by this right to respect t

he law. Every person has intrinsic worth and the right to be treated with dignity, equity, fairness and compassion when involved with the criminal justice process. All people have the potential to become responsible citizens. Every person has the right and the responsibility to be informed about, and involved in, the criminal justice process. Justice is best served through measures that resolve conflicts, repair harm and restore peaceful relations in society. Independent, autonomous non-government organizations have a vital role in the criminal justice process. People have the right to live in a safe and peaceful society as well as the responsibility to accept humane consequences when this right is infringed.

Last week, we had the pleasure of visiting Hanwell Rural Community Council to share a little about the work we do. We were also honoured to present Council with a plaque as a small token of our heartfelt thanks for their generous sponsorship of Coldest Night of the Year.

Their support means so much to us—and, more importantly, to the people we serve every day. Because of caring community partners like Hanwell Rural Community, we can continue to be there for people experiencing hurt, hunger and homelessness.

Thank you, Hanwell Rural Community, for your generosity, compassion and commitment to making our community a better place for everyone. We are truly grateful to have you by our side.

Our weekly peer support group meetings are open to anyone in the local community. We offer an inclusive, non-judgmental atmosphere for all participants.

We now offer our peer support groups at two locations - the Oak Centre Café and Wilmot United Church!

Peer support is a way of relating to someone through shared humanity and core commonalities with the goal of offering and/or receiving support. The peer support group is a judgment-free zone that enables individuals to feel heard and understood among others who are going through or have gone through similar experiences.

Topics include mental health, addictions, homelessness, grief and loss, and more.

We also offer one-on-one peer support by appointment.

Peer support continues to be a core part of our organization, providing relational, trust-based support grounded in lived experience. Participants consistently tell us that having someone who truly “gets it” can make the difference between giving up and staying connected.

During the 2025–2026 fiscal year, our certified peer support workers supported 285 unique individuals in Fredericton and surrounding communities. Through these connections, many participants experienced greater housing stability, reduced involvement with the justice system, and increased engagement with essential services, including healthcare, counselling, and income supports.

These outcomes reflect the value of peer support in helping people build trust, strengthen connections, and move toward greater stability and well-being.

Today is a day to reflect on the history of slavery in Canada and to recognize that racism, including systemic racism still exists in our country and in our community.

On this day, and every day, we encourage all Canadians to learn more about the impact of slavery and to fight racism and discrimination in all its forms.

Did you know that both indigenous people and people of African descent were enslaved in what is now Canada?

On August 1, 1884, the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British Empire. However, for most enslaved people in British North America, the act only provided for partial liberation. The act only freed children under the age of six. All others had to continue to work, without pay, for their former owners as “apprentices” for an additional four to six years.

The Ironwood Resource Centre exists to support people who too often fall through the cracks.

Open 24/7, Ironwood provides a safe, welcoming space where individuals experiencing homelessness can access basic needs like showers, laundry, refreshments, and connections to vital community services—all without barriers or judgment.

Working alongside healthcare providers, social services, outreach teams, and other community partners, our staff help people navigate complex challenges while building pathways toward housing, stability, and hope.

Everyone deserves dignity, compassion, and the opportunity to move forward.
